It is not correct, BYD sold more BEVs in last quarter. But overall Tesla still leads in BEV sales 2023 (1.84 vs 1.6 millions) and BYD does both electric and hybrid. see below for the details.

The news report only referred to the last quarter not the whole year so it is correct. There’s no doubt BYD will exceed Tesla sales in 2024.It is not correct, BYD sold more BEVs in last quarter. But overall Tesla still leads in BEV sales 2023 (1.84 vs 1.6 millions) and BYD does both electric and hybrid. see below for the details.

In 2023, Tesla produced 1.84 million vehicles, fewer than BYD's 3 million.
It has since 2022 - and that is not the news. The news is about BEV sales and Tesla is still ahead. BYD sells some of the low priced cars and they sell predominantly in Chinese market.
It was pretty clear what he meant - BYD will overtake Tesla for BEV sales for the full 2024 calendar year.
They overtook Tesla for BEV sales in Q4 2023 - that is related to the headline and is accurate. Their rate of growth and new sales markets will easily see them beat Tesla for a full CY in 2024.

Sales were 526,000 vs 484,500 for Q4.
Out of this 70% of sales was done in Dec 2023 ie., 368,000 vehicles sold in Dec. If you go there they will give you one for free!

I work in EV automotive, BYD are dropping me one off for 4 days next week to try out and review. I have seen one in the flesh and was very very impressed, so weill be fascinating to see how it compares to my Tesla 3 Dual Motor.

Personally wouldn’t consider a BYD but competition is great.
As I said in my original post the title is the BBC headline. People can explore the news behind the headline to get the full story if they are sufficiently interested.
What is clear is that BYD sold more BEVs than Tesla in Q4, and they’re going to sell a LOT more than Tesla in 2024.
Of course they will. Cook some numbers you can beat any company. I know some football clubs do that regularly with only 30000 fans locally.
Believe that while BYD may sell a higher volume of cars, Tesla gets more revenue and profit from each one.
Kind of like how iPhone makes more profit than all the other cell phones put together, even at at much lower volumes.
News headline is pretty click bait. If they posted that Tesla makes more profit than BYD, nobody would take interest.

Noticed adverts on TV for the Seal the last few days
Very odd as a consumer, but then again he’s probably sunk all his money on Tesla shares so any bad news for Tesla will really hit him in the pocket

Nah, just don’t want to pay shed loads of money to franchise dealers and legacy automakers who unfairly cheated customers for the last 100 years. I picked up Y from Brent Cross - simple and effective service. No suits and no selling GAP or other extras or cutting deals with car sales man.
