I'm in the suburbs in SoCal, so traffic is nearly constant. I've definitely had drives with no lead car on freeways, but it's pretty rare. As for the sun, I've had a few drives, coming into OC from Ontario (on 91-W) in the late afternoon when the sun is right in my eyes. I was impressed that AP could see the lane lines while I couldn't see them at all - totally washed out by the low direct sunlight. What do you know. Even before owning a Tesla, I made sure my commute does not get that sun in the eye situation. Traffic is terrible on those roads especially rush hours due to the making everyone blind. So fortunately because of my past decisions, I have yet to experience that situation on my Tesla.
The problem I had was that as a safety driver, I'm supposed to monitor the vehicle and take over - but in this case I couldn't see the lanes, so I totally trusted the Tesla to do the driving, and it worked very well.
