Presuming it does actually do what it states and puts you in the earlier part of a version rollout, the downside is certainly exactly what you've already identified - the earlier you install the more likely you are to be an un-enlisted Tesla beta tester.

No matter how long you wait, you will get buggy software updates. Particularly infotainment and human interface changes become buggy when they worked before, or are buggy from the start until many updates later. It is your choice. Perhaps not setting this to advanced will provide a bit less aggravation, or delay the aggravation, but you have already agreed to adopt Tesla's way of doing things by buying the car. Submit now, or later. :)
