Yes, 9:50 in the linked video clearly shows RHD Model 3 on the transport:

Mr. M, you better find a few more ships since it looks like there are going to a "boatload" of Tesla's looking for a ride soon...

I've seen all these videos and people getting excited over here that they could receive a MIC Model 3 but, BUT, what's wrong with the idea of them heading to Japan? or Australia/NZ?
My money is on Japan.

GLOVIS CAPTAIN is about to depart Pier 80. She has updated her AIS with her destination being the Panama Canal with an ETA of 1300 (Local) 24 Jan. This means we shall see a reasonably fast voyage down there. The weather continues to look good for the entire trip to the Canal.
I am now going to bring forward my estimate for her arrival in Zeebrugge to 6 Feb.

The 1st ship to Europe in 2021 Q1 is on the way!

Welcome to the ship tracking thread where the aim is to follow your new Model 3 as it makes it’s way to you.

GLOVIS CAPTAIN has departed Pier 80 enroute to the Pacific entrance of the Panama Canal.

Why does this thread exist? Unlike other car manufacturers Tesla will not initiate communications with you after you have placed your order until just before delivery when they want to be paid. You will have possibly been told an expected delivery date which may, or may not, prove to be accurate. Due to this vacuum of knowledge a mini industry of Tesla tracking has emerged. There are websites and social media sites that dabble in this however I am Mr Miserable and I have quickly established a reputation for providing in this thread accurate and timely information on Model 3 shipping to the EU and particularly the UK.

First of all, some background. You may know some or all of this already.

Your car has been manufactured in Fremont, California and it has been transported by road to the port of San Francisco and specifically to Pier 80. It will have sat there for up to a week or so before being loaded on to a ship designed especially to transport cars and other wheeled vehicles. There are hundreds of these big ugly monsters at sea at anytime and they operate globally. Tesla have chartered the entire ship for this single voyage to transport the cars to Europe. The ship’s destination will be Zeebrugge in Belgium. To get there it will travel down the Pacific coast to the Panama Canal (about 8 days), transit the canal (1 day) and then cross the Caribbean into the Atlantic and finally up the English Channel to Zeebrugge (11 days). A total sea journey of roughly 8000 miles in about 3 weeks at an average speed of 16kts.

Generally all the LHD Model 3s are unloaded in Zeebrugge and distributed from there by road, rail and sea (on a different ship) to the rest of Europe and Scandinavia. RHD Model 3s often remain onboard and the ship then sails to Southampton where it unloads at pier 104 or 105 in the Western docks about 2 or 3 days after arriving in Zeebrugge. Cars are then moved by road to Tesla delivery centres or by sub-contractors for delivery direct to your door. You can also pick your car up from a temporary delivery centre Tesla have set up in a cruise terminal in Southampton Western Docks. Some lease vehicles are delivered first to a central disused airfield location and are then subsequently delivered to your door by the leasing company.

You can follow the ship on a number of ship tracking websites:
www.marinetraffic.com
www.vesselfinder.com
to name but 2, there are many others.

These websites receive location data of the ships generally from shore-based radio receivers. Once the ship is more than about 150 miles off the coast it will be out of the range of the shore based receivers and the only way of continuing to track the ship is by satellite. You can take out a satellite subscription to continue tracking the ship however you may find it prohibitively expensive (~£1200pa) or you could take out a daily subscription costing just over £20 for each ship for the 3 week trip, or you can just let me do it for you because that is what I do. Each “Tesla” ship is tracked and I will post a daily report on its progress or otherwise. All free of charge. Along the way, I will post other items which may or may not be of interest about the weather, the route, the ship and other related trivia. If you find it all fascinating, please come back and follow another ship or two!

Today’s subject is the Tesla shipping season. Tesla like many other companies are very conscious of their quarterly financial figures. They aim to sell every car they make in any quarter in the same quarter. So a car manufactured in January, February or March must be sold by the end of March, and so on. To be deemed as sold the car must not only be paid for in full but actually delivered to the customer. It makes sense then that cars destined for Europe are manufactured at the beginning of the quarter and in the last month of the quarter no cars are exported to Europe. This means that ships will depart in the 1st two months of any quarter and none in the 3rd. This is why there is a feast or famine cycle of Model 3 availability. (Model S and X are slightly different. Click here to find out about them) This cycle also explains the mad rush at the end of every quarter to deliver all the cars. We normally receive around 7 to 8 shipments each quarter in Europe with up to 5 ships enroute at any one time. For Model 3 there is no way of knowing exactly which ship your car is on bar being told by a friendly Tesla person. You can however have a pretty good guess based on when you expect delivery and when you get 'matched'. This seems to happen within a day or 2 of the ship departing from Pier 80.
Another thing about Tesla and specifically Model 3 is that your car is not built to order - Tesla build whatever they want and then match those built against orders. It can mean that some folk could have a long wait for their particular specification. It means that you may have ordered the same day as someone else however you may not get delivery on the same day if your specification is different. Some get lucky, they order on Monday and take delivery on Friday whereas others wait, and wait, and then wait some more. This waiting can be incredibly frustrating and inconvenient, but trust me, it’s worth the wait!

Finally now the shipping season to Europe is at last under way, I do request that posts to this thread from now on be confined to shipping related matters. Please.

Will this show on our Account or will get a text/email or should be phone Tesla with our RN number if we have an allocation/match? Or any other way? Don’t want to seem to be bugging them every few days if not on this ship and have to keep doing on following ships... (M3LR white, black seats, normal wheels but with tow hitch).
if phoning, maybe around Tuesday/wednesday?Thanks.

My money is on Japan.

I can confirm the online configurators have changed in Australia, New Zealand, with new range and trim options in line with China builds.
Tesla staff locally in Australia. also confirmed they were seeing vins in the system starting with LRW.

It is not confirmed yet if all or only some variants will be out of China for ANZ. We could see a split like last quarter - SR+ China, LR/P Fremont - yet to be seen.

I am not seeing any ship indications yet to either country.

I too expect to see a large number of Hong Kong/Macau RHD builds, and expect Japan and UK too given the large numbers seen at Giga Shanghai, but this is yet to be confirmed.

GLOVIS CAPTAIN departed Pier 80 yesterday and is making her way down the Pacific coast towards Panama at 17kts.
The big news about her today is that the indications are that she has a transit of the Panama Canal booked for the morning of 25 Jan and so her ETA for Balboa has been brought forward to 2000z 24 Jan. She has increased her speed to achieve that ETA. I still think she will arrive in Zeebrugge around 6 Feb. (Southampton a couple of days later) The weather continues to look good for her voyage south and she has already seen a 6 degree increase in temperature to 16C from San Francisco.

I don't normally talk about VIN matching on this thread but those waiting for cars might want to call Tesla tomorrow to see if they have become matched. If you have, then it's a pretty good clue that your car will be onboard this ship. Importantly, please put any news on this subject into the Orders & Deliveries thread. Thank you!

Don't forget to enter the Glovis Captain competition where you can win.. err... absolutely nothing! Click HERE to enter.

RCC AMSTERDAM has, exactly as forecasted on this thread, left Benicia to move alongside Pier 80 this morning. I'm not sure at the moment when she will depart, or to where she will depart to, however I do not believe she will be coming to Europe and believe she is more likely to be heading to a destination in the Far East.

HORIZON LEADER which will be the next to load at Pier 80 has popped over the horizon and can now be seen heading to San Diego. In fact, she looks as though she will pass within visual range this afternoon of GLOVIS CAPTAIN as she heads south. I am confident that HORIZON LEADER will be coming to Europe and I have pencilled in an ETA for Zeebrugge of around 15 Feb for her.

Mr. M,
Last quarter you tracked the Chinese ships that came to Europe. Will you be tracking the Chinese departing ships that go to other destinations, like these referenced here?

If Fremont traffic to Europe gets severely curtailed when the Berlin Gigafactory comes online later this year, surely there will be something needed to occupy your time. And you seem like a fairly good candidate given your background and good work done on this thread. So what's it going to be? It would keep you out of the Pubs, right :)

Until such time as the ships depart from the new pier (I'm not sure when it is due to finish) tracking the ships from China will be very difficult without inside knowledge. The Chinese have done really well at keeping me out of the pub over the last year and are off my Christmas card list for the forseeable future. Berlin will start with Model Y I believe and so Model 3s will still be bobbing around the oceans for some time....

I missed the closest point of approach between these two but the timing and distances seemed to have worked out roughly as predicted (maybe nearer 8:15 though).

Screenshot 2021-01-17 at 20.32.57.png

This type of calculation, CPA, is done electronically on the navigation display nowadays with just a click of the mouse and allows the bridge crew to see how close another ship will come if each ship maintains its present course and speed. An alarm will be set as a matter of routine that will give plenty of warning if another vessel is in danger of coming too close. What is too close? That is decided by the Captain and will be briefed to the Officer of the Watch in his orders.
