Is the Tesla multi coat paint job ($1,500) the same thing as metallic paint ($750) with several more coats, or is the paint itself different as well? Is there a big difference in the final look?

You have to see it to appreciate the Pearl effect paints. Audi had a lovely Pearl White in its lineup until a few years ago. The best jobs use a base coat, top coat, then clear coat to build up layers of depth, using mica or other translucent filler to create an iridescence similar to mother-of-pearl or natural pearls. There's a good article in autos.com

I am hoping/assuming they are using industry standard lingo here.
A pearl finish has kind of a pearl like lustre/iridescence to it and most luxury cars offer this at a premium.
It actually looks kind of nice. But a "Pearl White" will look less white than "White". Even with the Design Studio
that they have up now, you can get some idea. It is almost like it has a fine coating of the pearl outer layer ground
very fine and baked into the the paint. Similarly with metal coats. Some manufactures even claim they have
extra coats than standard paint.
I saw a Mercedes finish yesterday that was STUNNING !! It was a pearl white, but with a semi-matt finsh not gloss. It was at night. I would like to see it again in the daytime.
