What has the auto industry done differently to sway COY away from Tesla?

2015 Volkswagen Golf is the 2015 Motor Trend Car of the Year

To me, it would seem that if you haven't done anything differently than you have for the last years/decades/millenia, the award should still go out to the Model S???

Gotcha. I wasn't aware of the criteria Motortrend used for the award. Maybe the award should be "New Car of the Year".

When the Model X eventually comes out, it will probably be at the top again since it's a new vehicle. You don't really see any competitors directly targeting Tesla as they're all coming up with solutions from the other direction like hybrids.
