Autonomous Driving Early Beta

The newly launched release 5.9 of the Tesla Model S software contains a hidden beta version of the self-driving autopilot Tesla Motors are developing.

Elon Musk has repeatedly stated that Tesla Motors are developing self-driving cars. The function will be a sort of autopilot that manages to drive the car 90% of the traffic situations (human help might still be needed in advanced driving situations). Tesla Motors has decided not to license the technology from Google -that has come far in the research on self-driving cars- but develop their own version of the technology in-house. Tesla Motors will use cheap cameras instead of the expensive laser scanners Google's solution uses.

A small note about improved rear camera in release 5.9 hides the first early beta version of Tesla Motors' solution. To turn it on you must -after release 5.9 has been loaded into your car wirelessly- keep the Tesla logo at the top of the screen pressed for 10 seconds until a box requesting access code comes up. Then enter code DRIVE to enable the autopilot. Now on the Controls, Driving screen it has appeared an EVIRD button (drive backwards) that you can turn on when the car is stationary with the reverse gear engaged.

As the Tesla Model S only has a rear facing camera so far, the autopilot can only drive the car backwards in reverse gear, and only at low speeds. But still it's incredibly fun to try!

Remember now that the autopilot is in the experimental stage yet, and you need to closely monitor your car while it is moving! You are still responsible if any accidents occur!
