There's a long history of electronicky (it's a word now... ) things defaulting to 12 (AM or PM) when they don't know any better (wall power pulled, etc.). At least on the Model S, the 12 isn't blinking.
Remember that these settings are stored PER CHARGING LOCATION so as long as you don't set a charge timer at a given location it will charge on plug-in. The Roadster works this way as well.
Colin, I plugin as soon as I get home but, stop charging (either from the touchscreen or from the mobile app). I start charging again just before I go to bed using the mobile app.
I really want this too. My method isn't that bad but I still have to wake up at 5 after 11pm to set my car to charge.
My current method:
Plug in the car every time it is in my garage. I do this immediately.
Stop charging via touchscreen, or phone app (if not during super off-peak time).
Set daily alarm on phone for 11:03pm. "Charge Car"
Open phone app, press 'start charging' button. Wait to see car is charging.
Go to bed.

when i saw this option 2 years ago , I thought why would anyone need this feature .. Now i know why !
hopefully tesla will release the new firmware for Timer Charging .
