Koni Sport (yellow) installed!

Hello all! I just received a set of Koni Sports (yellow) for my LR RWD and wanted to share my thoughts.

My impression of the stock suspension is typical of what many have posted. It seemed to me that is was very under-damped, particularly in the rear. Over large compressions the rear would rebound aggressively, giving a "pogo stick" effect. I always thought that it needed STIFFER dampers.

Installation of the front shocks is pretty typical. It's a coil-over assembly, so a spring compressor is needed. It is necessary to separate the upper ball joint from the upright, but that's pretty simple. The only issue I had is where the upper shock mount bolts through the body. There are multiple layers of material and the upper layer wasn't aligned perfectly with the lower layer, so a socket wouldn't fit. It was a simple fix with a die grinder.

Rear shocks are super easy to replace. The upper shock mounts bolt in from underneath, so there's no need to remove trunk liner or anything. Also the bolts are captive on the mount which is super convenient.

I initially set all 4 shocks at full soft. As these are adjustable, there's no way to know what's "right" until you actually try it. Also, the shocks do need a bit of time to break in. They will get a bit softer over the first couple hundred miles.

First impression: 100x better than stock, but still insufficient rebound damping in the rear. I adjusted the rears up 1/2 turn.

This made it even better! Still a bit under damped, though. I adjusted the rears up another 1/4 turn.

Even better yet! Now I could feel that the front was a bit floaty, so I adjusted the fronts up 1/4 turn.

Front now felt great! Rear was close, but borderline under-damped, so I adjusted them up another 1/4 turn. That's a total of 1/4 turn in the front and 1 turn in the rear. The car feels great now. Very "German" in character. The car is very stable and composed, just as good as any BMW I've owned.

Since I've been working on this, I've started to suspect that my car has some of the wickedly stiff rear springs that were fitted to early cars. From the info I've gathered, it appears that they're about as stiff as the P3D springs, only taller (they're a bit firm for a daily driver IMO). FYI, If you have a later LR or a SR, you probably need a bit less rebound. Maybe 1/2 - 3/4 turn or thereabouts?

I'm on the lookout for a pair of the later (softer) rear springs. LR RWD or AWD. If anyone has some available, hit me up. Part number should end with an "01-E", I think.

Master Thread: Definitive 14-50 NEMA Outlet Guide

Comparing the 2 outlets recommended by Tesla with the sub $10 big box model as well as the one I think you should buy

1. Hubbell 9450a
2. Bryant 9450fr
3. Cooper 5754n
4. Leviton 279-S00

The Hubbell and Bryant are far and away the superior product here and since Hubbell owns Bryant and these outlets were recently redesigned you can see from the pictures that there is almost no difference in these products, looks to me that it may only be the size of the allen screws and that is it.

The main reasons these are superior are, Lug boxes with V shape and the heavy copper strap that when tightening gathers the wire together instead of separating them and the fact that these both use 75 in. pounds of torque instead of 25 like the other 2, they both handle higher temperatures and have heavier one pc. power and ground contacts, there is no comparison to any other 14-50 Nema outlets.

The Cooper is good and much heavier than the Leviton but still falls short of the Hubbell and Bryant.

The Leviton unit is like a toy compared to others as it's really poorly built with smaller contacts, screw terminals without a pinch lock causing the wire to be stressed when tightened, just a cheap design.

Best part is now you don't have to pay $90 to $100 or more for the Hubbel as you can get the Bryant for $21

Electrify America Fast Chargers - Huh?

I'm hoping that someone here can figure out this mystery, as I'm baffled. I just saw some Electrify America (the VW diesel-gate funded charging stations) pop up on Plugshare. I'm happy to see another 'serious' fast charging network - the more the merrier in helping get EVs adopted, I figure, even if the supercharger network is likely all I'll ever need.

CCS/Chademo chargers I've seen tend to be single stations, which isn't very useful for reliable charging. They can be easily blocked, out of service, or busy charging someone else! So I took a look on plugshare at a new site in Mount Vernon, MO, and was happy to see the description of "4 stations, 7 CCS plugs + 1 Chademo". That sounds smart, I thought - two cables per pedestal serves 2 cars, sort of like supercharger pairing. Then I looked at the pictures, and was left scratching my head (photos from plugshare):

ea_charger1.jpg
ea_charger2.jpg

There are only 4 parking spaces! What's the point of having 2 CCS cables per space? I can sort of see for the CCS/Chademo, which is one or the other, but why would you put in 2 cables when you can clearly only service one car?

Thoughts I came up with:

  • The cable's kind of short, so maybe they have 2 so they can cover both left and right-hand charge ports. But wouldn't have been cheaper just to make a slightly longer cable?
  • Maybe they intended them all to be CCS/Chademo, and changed the design at the last minute? But that's kind of dumb.
  • Maybe the install contractor just screwed up? But I looked at some other sites and they look the same.
I'm not even talking about that 4th curb stop which is completely unaligned with the station.

Any thoughts? I'm at a loss.

Cyber Bullying?

Have others been alarmed by the vitriol and hyperbole in some of the threads here? I am brand new here, and generally avoid online forums, although I used to participate in a couple engineering forums that were usually collegial. In a thread on possible unintended acceleration (from brake pedal application) the OP was called a troll, but he quite clearly is not one. I "parachuted" into the discussion, one poster claimed. I was castigated for believing that computers (including microcontrollers), firmware, and software can fail. Some accused me of being fearful of computers (despite nothing that I said would indicate that). (I've built some, programmed many, and taught many (500-1000) industrial workers to work with PLCs and their input and output devices. I built a plug-in hybrid microcar that goes 10 miles per kilowatt hour -- child's play as compared to the industrial work, with less than two pages of code, as compared to 1000's)

A moderator claimed that there was not a gender-biased edge to the discussion, even though there were several references like "Hell hath no fury..." etc.

However, Tronguy offered a few remarkably articulate and well-informed posts that were, in my view, word perfect and entirely true regarding the nature of hardware and software, (and corporate scapegoating and shirking) with which we seem to have similar experience. ... his more extensive than mine, I think. But his posts were met with largely baseless conjecture, regarding the impossibility of failure modes. I am thankful for his posts, and would have said so in that thread, but was locked out of making any response.

Thank you Tronguy. There may be other posts on this site by people who actually know how stuff works on... I just haven't seen many that go beyond superficiality and strongly expressed opinions without any data backup. Your posts in that thread were right on the money... every single word.

Is this not deceptive?

OK, Tesla fanboys and fangirls... I'm prepared for your "no, you're an idiot" replies but this has been bothering me...

Is Tesla not being deceptive with the whole "after est gas savings" business?

For example, this is on the homepage of the Tesla website right now. And you KNOW people see "From $299/mo" and stop reading. No way in the WORLD you're getting a $299/month Model Y lease unless you put down something like $20K. And Tesla knows this.

This "estimated gas savings" just seems to dirty to me. Might be good marketing but for someone about to do a financial transaction this is meaningless.

Thoughts?

Prediction: Coal has fallen. Nuclear is next then Oil.

We've witnessed almost a complete collapse of the coal industry. Companies that once commanded Billions in Market Value just 5 year ago have been reduced to Bankrupt shells. Things can change very quickly when inflection points are reached.

Nuclear and Coal share the same base load profile. The one thing nuclear advocates are pushing to save nuclear 'A Carbon Tax' will also promote its poison; Variable Wind and Solar. If their growth continues we could see significant nuclear curtailment in less than 5 years. Plants with a capacity factor of >90% are running razor thin margins. They can't survive even modest curtailment.

As Bloomberg pointed out a few weeks ago... EVs are poised to lower demand enough to cause a permanent collapse in the price of oil by ~2022. As more countries pledge to ban petrol powered cars in the next 15 years and Tesla has accelerated production plans this appears to be almost inevitable.

Supercharger - Taree, NSW

Tesla is proposing a 6-bay supercharger site in Taree. They've been negotiating with council for a location.

News story (paywalled for me): MidCoast Council considers Tesla "supercharger station" for Taree

It will be discussed at council meeting today: https://www.midcoast.nsw.gov.au/fil.../25-august-2021-ordinary-meeting-agenda-i.pdf

Council planning offers have recommended support and have offered two possible locations.

(I've added to supercharge.info with the first location - pin can be moved in the future if needed)

New owner supercharging first day without app

Hello, so I am picking up a used 2017 Model S 75. It's 4 hours away from my home. My question is I am reading online that if I want supercharge on the way home which I will need to, I have to be linked as the owner in the Tesla app with the vehicle. However, everything I'm reading says it takes 3 to 5 business days for the ownership to actually be adjusted within the Tesla app after you provide proof of new ownership. Does anybody know if there's anything I can do with the seller as I'm picking up the car to make this happen immediately where I am connected as new owner with my payment method in the app? or if I can't use the Tesla superchargers on the way home are there other chargers you would recommend that I use that I can just pay with a normal debit card? I am brand new to this, so just wanna make sure I can charge on the way home after pick up the car because it is a 4 Hour Drive. I'm driving from Tampa Florida to Jacksonville, fl

Tesla, TSLA & the Investment World: the Perpetual Investors' Roundtable

Welcome to the 2019 Investors' Roundtable. This year, we are not going to try to split discussions between a "Market Action" and a "General" thread, as years of experience has shown all are too enthusiastic about putting their opinions and observations in a fairly random dispersion.

So post here - but as a specific topic gets discussed over a series of posts, we'll split it off to its own thread; this Master Thread will serve as the catch-all unless and until such a pattern emerges.

Othermod: Even better if you split it out yourselves, don't wait for us. --ggr.

Until midnight on 31 December...in some time zone...this thread will remain locked. You are encouraged to post away in the 2018 threads until then, at which time those will be locked.

With the key thrown away!

Happy New Year, all.

Frequent heat pump failures on Giga Berlin Ys delivered in Norway

A lot of Norwegians receiving their Model Ys (Giga Berlin production) have for some time now gotten failures on their heat pumps. The issue is supposedly due to a production error in the Berlin plant and metal particles that should not have been present are being taken into the HP system when using the heater (ext. source). The HP failures are so frequent that service centers are now having issues getting replacement parts. With Tesla not having any communications dept. and Norway management has a no-communications policy on such issues, more details on this is scarce.

Anyone from other countries receiving Giga Berlin had similar issues?

New car, 4,000 miles, replace one tire?

Got a nail near the firewall, need a new tire (Continental ProContact 255/45 R19 104W). Discount Tire recommends I replace both front tires.
Only 4K miles on the car. Haven't checked thread depth yet.
My understanding of the need to replace two (or all) tires is that as the tire wears, it gets smaller, so
now you've got two wheels on one axle that are rotating at slightly different speeds, which can cause stress to drive components.
But after some research, it would seem that Tesla's open differential would not really be affected by this.

Would you guys but just 1 tire, or 2 or 4 at this point?

Thanks for your input,
Mike

TACC doesn't work correctly after the 2024.14.8 update

I don't trust Autosteer and doesn't have FSD trial, so I set Autopilot to TACC in my 2024 Model 3 LR AWD. Since the 2024.14.8 firmware update I cannot engage TACC and the screen doesn't show lane lines, only cars. I have Autopilot set to TACC only and it worked fine with the factory 2024.8.100 firmware. I found that if I switch Autopilot to Autosteer, put the car in gear and then switch back to TACC, I can engage TACC normally, but I have to do this every time I start driving. I called Tesla service and was advised to request a service appointment, which I did. However, since I can work around the issue I think the hardware on my car is fine and it is a bug with the update. Does anyone else have this issue?
