I love the ability to shift between R and D while parking or "un" parking, and I know the OM says it's ok and is permitted below 5mph. But lately I'm getting a very disturbing noise from somewhere in the left/front area of my 2019 Model 3 Perf when doing this maneuver. The sound is hard to describe but I'm sure it should not be happening. It almost sounds like a spring is wound up then the tension is released. Seems to happen more reliably if I nail the accelerator pedal after shifting while still rolling backwards.
75K miles on the car and this is fairly recent behavior. Assuming it's the drivetrain it should be covered for the 8 years / 120K miles.
I have a service center appointment ($172) but I thought I'd ask here first.
Thanks in advance.
Keith
