Model 3 Highland Steering Issues

And I have to say, the change in ratio doesn't make a whole lot of difference to me in this car compared to my '72 MLR
I agree it's a small amount but I noticed it.
It might depend how you drive it, I like more responsiveness and small quick movements. It's not deal-breaker bad, just not as engaging as my 2020. A small degree.

Someone on this forum said they prefer the new ratio as the old one was too responsive to small changes so maybe Tesla are smoothing it for the masses/comfort/ease of use etc.

Actually I never confirmed whether that ratio change was across all models. I only drove a standard range. Would love to know, I assume it is.

I've not looked at what this offset does or is changed - whether it's an automatic process or what. All I know is that it had a value and now it is zero!
It's the value calculated when you carry out the EPAS check or just drive for a while (after resetting it). If your steering wheel isn't absolutely straight when the car is going straight ahead, it needs to know that so that autopilot/FSD works correctly.
It's quite common for the offset to be a few degrees one way or the other and most drivers won't even notice the wheel being off by a couple of degrees. Any more than that and the car needs an alignment.
If yours is actually 0 after you've driven it a while then it looks like they've got your alignment bang on (which is a pleasant surprise TBH!).

The thing is, the ratio change in isolation may not be noticed by many, but an alignment change can make a car feel more or less responsive to small steering inputs, so that could have been what they felt more than the ratio change. And everything else would need to be equal - tyre type, tread depth, pressures, etc etc.
I think there's a good chance the new M3P will have a quicker rack but as none have been delivered yet we don't know. The current P is 10:1 I believe. Some drivers have complained that's too quick, but you can't please all the people all of the time.

Right, took the car to Solihull this morning for them to rebalance the wheels and sort out this vagueness in the steering. I also mentioned that the car on AP on the motorway doesn't sit in the middle of the lane but to the LHS....
I took one of their Highlands out for a quick test drive to see if it was just me / 2 cars or mine was a duffer. Their Highland felt completely normal.
Got my car back with this summary of the work done:

Carried out wheel alignment and adjusted the front camber and
toe as well as the rear camber and toe, specs were slightly out
of tolerance but are now within spec. Carried out a rebalance
of all 4 wheels. Carried out a road test and confirmed the
vehicle drives as intended
On the hour long drive home it felt a lot, lot better but I'll need to do some more miles to confirm it's fully acceptable.
As to the cars positioning in the lane - the tech said that might be to do with the alignment issues but to report further...

HTH someone,

Nic
Hello mate. I bought the M3LR highland a few months ago and had to return it due to vibrations at 65-70mph. I also went to solihull to have the car looked at but no improvements. I was just wondering how you have been getting on ? are your issues all sorted ?

Watcha, yep - no real issues with the car now. Wheel vibrations are minimal and the dead spot has pretty much disappeared.
Did they rebalance all the wheels?

they rebalanced all the wheels and checked the tracking but I could still feel the vibrations between 65-70mph. I had a brand new exact same spec 2022 model and that was perfect so I noticed the difference straight away. do you still feel vibrations at a certain speed ? I normally rest my hand on the steering as I like to use autopilot and I could feel the vibrations but if I gripped the steering wheel the vibrations would disappear. does the same happen for you ?

This has sometimes proved to be flat spots with the tyres on new cars. Supposedly happening due to how they were tied down on the boats bringing them over. The only sure way to diagnose is swap wheels with a known good set, although in bad cases if you jack one corner up and spin the wheel it may be possible to see the flat spot..

TBH I don’t drive very often at 65-70. Either slow around town or 80+ on motorways. And the roads here in Herefordshire are pretty crappy (M40 not much better) so I haven’t really felt much on the way of vibrations since they did the tracking.

I’m pretty sure all 4 tyres needed balancing but couldn’t tell you how much per corner.

There is a thread somewhere on here about possible deformed tyres / flat spots due low tyre pressure whilst on ships.
Might be something like that?
Have you had the Tesla technician confirm the vibration?

Good video.

I did notice that they had winter tyres on so not the e-primacy’s that the UK M3’s have been fitted with.

I’m currently in KwikFit getting a tyre replaced due a bolt (!) on OSR. They didn’t have a replacement so Tusker authorised 2 new Pilot Sport 4’s so I’ll be interested to see if there is any change to the car vibration….

The type of tyre doesn't really make a difference if that is the cause. What it does show is that even a very slight flat spot can cause a vibration.
Vibrations can also be caused by manufacturing defects in the tyres, so there are plenty of opportunities for tyres to be to blame, regardless of whether the wheels are properly balanced.

For sure - although the guy in the film mentioned a couple of times that it was the tyre manufacturer at fault, rather than Tesla.

Yes, correct but not that specific tyre. And in the case of flat spots caused by the shipping process, it could be argued it's the shipping company's responsibility.
To be fair to Tesla, if the car is good when it leaves the factory, a fault like this is going to be very difficult to detect when they arrive at the collection point. Having said that, there have been enough reports of these vibrations now that all the SCs should be aware of the causes.

I've been following this carefully as I have a Highland I'll be picking up in 2 weeks, was one of my main concerns with ordering. From what I can see from a few videos with experts on this it always seems to come back to the tyres or alignment issues. However some people with this issue say they've had new tyres and wheels + alignment and not gone away.

However some of those videos with cars that have this issue have checked the car pretty carefully and not just looked at the wheels, alignment. The car has always been spot on without any issues so I do feel this is not a Tesla issue but tyres, alignment or in some cases could be water has soaked into the noise cancelling foam in the tyres.

Don't know this 100% but not sure it's quite as wide spread as some suggest. Famous last words now before I pick my car up in 2 weeks :(

Touch wood, mine is fine and had it since Feb with no noticeable vibrations.
