I'm guessing that's affordable, and irrelevant to them.(Because they gave away "free" roadsters for various promotions, and canceling it would open themselves up to lawsuits)

These dorsal fins aren't new at all. Just look at Audi's competitor for the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 2011, as one example for their use.Yangwang copied ff finView attachment 1040249View attachment 1040250
Seriously though, what the hell is this?
Russell: I’m not an expert in battery pack technology, but it seems that a lot of people are speculating that the specs for the Semi truck, even I believe the CEO of Daimler said it breaks the laws of physics. So, I’m wondering is this just a linear...
Musk: He doesn’t know much about physics. I know him. I’d be happy to engage in a physics discussion with him. I actually studied physics in college.
Russell: So, yeah, my question is that just a linear improvement in your battery technology? Or is there some sort of new breakthrough or different platform that the Semi and Roadster are going to be built on?
Musk: I mean, even if we didn’t improve our battery technology at all, we could achieve a 500 mile range truck at all. We’re going to do better than 500 miles.
Elon's nothing if not overly optimistic when it comes to the results of a back-of-the-envelope "first principles" physics estimation of how well a thing will turn out.
Happy SIX YEAR Elonversary to this Earnings Call.

Also applies to the Semi as well.
Not as I recall it. As I recall it, Elon claimed new roof of solar tiles would be cheaper than a new asphalt roof + new solar panels. Even that didn't work out, at which point he added "+ avoided cost of electricity" to try and make the statement vaguely true, and finally added + "similar premium roof" by which he meant slate.Elon's nothing if not overly optimistic when it comes to the results of a back-of-the-envelope "first principles" physics estimation of how well a thing will turn out.
Let's not forget the solar roof claims! It was going to be CHEAPER than installing a new normal asphalt roof.
That's the Wang.Seriously though, what the hell is this?

Makes me think this was an AI generated image, and the human forgot to check it. This fin-shaped thing doesn't appear in other images of the car.
October 28, 2016 at the solar roof event, he said the goal was to have a solar roof that "have an installed cost less than the cost a regular roof plus the cost of electricity; so why would you have anything else?" (EDIT: if you listen to that whole presentation, he repeatedly emphasizes the "why would you have anything else" point. IOW the cost is supposed to be so low that it's a no-brainer, such that eventually all neighborhoods would switch to such a roof. Makes me sad to go back to 2016 and see the days when he was passionate about sustainable energy and reducing our impact on global warming.)Not as I recall it. I have no clue. But there are quite a few in my area, where people love to throw away their money. Don't get me wrong, I'm a big proponent of solar and the original concept of the solar roof tiles Tesla/Elong proposed in Oct. 2016. But the current product is nothing like the one they unveiled in 2016, and its cost is prohibitively high; like laughably high. It is just not worth the cost currently, IMO. I'm ballparking here, but in most regions, I estimate one can get a quality asphalt roof, with equivalent energy generation from Tesla panels, for about 1/3 the cost of their solar roof product. I mean, that's just wildly off the mark, 7.5 years after the original unveiling. So sad. But hey we have FSD supervised! Yay!How many Solar Roofs have actually been installed?
It's a bummer the new Roadster never got built. I had a Founders reservation and cancelled it after about 18 months of waiting and no news. I think there's a market for a high end electric sports car. I'd love a car that can drive itself to the track and then can handle a day of fun. I guess what I want is an electric 911.
I'm going to go against all of the arm-chair athletes here by saying that I think Tesla should continue with the Roadster and that they've been right about lowering its priority compared with the rest of their developments but it should be simmering on the back burner.Yes. Please kill the 2020 roadster, Elon.
