Vermont
I have owned 3 Teslas. First 2 had amazing home delivery experience. I live in northern Vermont, so hours from nearest Tesla showroom in the US. Roadster rolled off transport into a parking lot of bank near my home (eg, not delivered by Tesla rep). Car came with NY temp tags and everything I needed to register. Still have that car 7 years later and it has been my daily driver all year round until now. A year after Roadster, I took home delivery of a Model S Signature (now with my ex-partner). Tesla guy drove it up on a one-car trailer. The car came with CA temp registration and everything needed. Model 3 has been much worse. Once I was told delivery was at hand, they told me where to send $. As instructed, I got them the bank loan check and a Bank (eg, Teller's) check for my portion. They had it in their hands Sept 17. I was told car was in Baltimore waiting to ship. I got an email Friday morning Sept 21 saying car was going onto a transport and would be to me "in a day or 2." I went home late afternoon to take care of my dogs because we were going to be out Friday night having dinner with another couple. I found a message on my answering machine from the driver of the car carrier that he'd be there that same evening with my car. Huh?? Well, while I was there with the dogs before heading back out, fortunately he called again to say he wouldn't make it after all. Great. He says the next morning. So he shows up at the same bank parking lot where I took delivery of the Roadster. I didn't want him to navigate the dirt roads to my house with a car transporter—he had asked for an easy in/out place. I took the car, looked it over and off he went. Much to my surprise, I found the car had no temporary registration! So no way to legally drive it home from there. Let's just say I got it home somehow. But no MCO, so or odometer statement, so I can't fully register it in Vermont. When I finally got hold of my very difficult to get hold of Home Delivery specialist (located in Las Vegas, go figure), he told me they won't Fedex the MCO for at least 7 days after they get my payment so the checks can clear. Well, the day he was talking to me, it was already 9 days after they had the payment in their hand, and if that was their plan, why did them tell me I had to pay my downpayment in a BANK check and take on that extra hassle and expense. He said he'd see what he could do. Crickets. Still no MCO. As far as trying to get service to manage the punch list of items on the car I needed fixed at delivery, I was referred by local service (eg, Watertown, MA) to call Dedham, MA Tesla and go through the home delivery prompts. I did. No one ever answers, and it always rolls over to a full mailbox that won't take messages. I did manage to finally get through to the Tesla Main number you can be transferred to. After another 20-minute plus hold, the guy told me he would get me into Dedham on the phone. He came back to say he had them but his phone wouldn't set up the 3-way call or transfer the call for some reason. He said he was talking with them on his line though and would have them call me immediately at whatever number I needed call to come to. Great, except they didn't call. I called Tesla main number again later that day and got another person. She said there was no record of my first call. No one was able to set up the 2 repairs I needed or get my car to show up in the app. Finally, today, after another 20 minute call to Dedham that had to be rolled over to the main Tesla number because, well you know—no one picks up and the voicemail box is full—I found a guy who at least got the car turned on in my app and put in a service request for the 2 items needing fixing. But still no words on the MCO, and if I don't get one in a "timely" manner, my temporary registration will expire and I will forfeit the registration payment. The inability to talk to anyone is frustrating.

I accept Tesla is growing fast and has growing pains. I don't expect better service as a prior Roadster or Model S owner. But I do know they can do better because I have experienced it. Moreover, as a Tesla enthusiast, I am probably a little more patient than many for whom this is their first experience with the company. This is not a great PR thing. I was at an electric car parade today and was chatting with another local Model 3 owner. Same problem. He doesn't have an MCO either. When I was at DMV trying to get a temporary registration I met a guy who had been waiting WEEKS for his and still didn't get it. How can you ship a car to someone that they cannot legally drive away in??

Very sad situation for such a great car and company.

Sigh...

Sue for fraud and recklessness? It's what all the cool kids are doing lately.

Probably need to show up at the nearest service center and raise some hell to get anything done.
I have no emotional attachment to a car or a company. I think individual legal action may be the only recourse. I bought an M3, ie paid for an M3, and still do not have it because of a “failed battery”. I can live with a day or two but this is not right. I will be talking to my lawyer on Monday and my bank about reversing the ACH payment.

I can walk into the Toyota dealership this week and have a new car without indignity and poor support and forget Tesla.

I'm sure this is geographically diverse just like everything. I've had better service from Tesla than any dealership I've ever dealt with thus far. Are you another remote person that is far from service center?

I really doubt you have the standing to sue Tesla. I'm sure you can reverse payment, but I'd expect that you would forfeit your deposit per your signed contract. If you already signed the MVPA, it I think it states your only recourse is to get your funds back but IANAL so just interpreting what it says.

"Limitation of Liability. We are not liable for any incidental, special or consequential damages arising out of this Agreement. Your sole
and exclusive remedy under this Agreement will be limited to reimbursement of your Order Payment."

I hope they resolve this for you, as I otherwise completely understand your frustrations. I'm in a black hole myself waiting for an X and 3 to be delivered, but no one at Dedham picks up the phone, and the VM inbox is full.

You can arbitrate. There is contact info on your MVPA.

The MVPA also places a value on cancellation based on the deposit. It explicitly says your deposit is fair value for cancellation.
I will certainly be pressing those points

I've never had anything but stellar service from Dedham(including picking up my Model 3 a couple weeks ago). Not sure if you tried but when you call hit 2 again(after you hit 2 for service) and it will direct you directly to Dedham. Another idea is to make an appt. for service through your acct. on Tesla.com(I think it is for Watertown but whatev). This will document the issue and prompt a call back.

Once Tesla hits profitability all these weird delivery issues(that I've heard of...not personally experienced) will go away.

And for some perspective, how many car companies actually deliver there cars directly to customers and to northern VT no less?

Anyhow, it will all be worked out and if not you can sue them and buy a Toyota /s.

I have no desire to sue, that is not a solution. I can't make service appointment through my account since my account still doesn't realize I have the Model 3. I got an email back from the escalation I did online through my Roadster account. That person said they'd get back to me by Wednesday. We will see.

As far as the poster who commented on perspective and car companies in Northern VT, the answer is LOTS of dealerships are up here. No one delivers to your house, but I don't need that. I would happily go to them if they were where all the other dealers are. The bottom line is that if they want to be able to mass produce and sell to the masses, they need to get this right. I don't have time for them to reach profitability before I can get my car registered to drive on the road!

You don't need to sue, you can use the arbitration option on your MVPA.
Arbitrate and see where it goes. I am waiting to see how Tesla plans to compensate for their complete failure. If I'm not satisfied, then I will most likely go through arbitration.

You're definitely in a position to sue. There's an implied warranty that Tesla would provide sufficient information to make the car *registerable*. Disclaimers of that implied warranty will not hold up in court if you demand a jury trial.

That said, this is egregious enough that the arbitrator would go against Tesla too.

Hopefully you'll be able to resolve this without either extreme. There is no excuse for Tesla not sending out the Manufacturer's Certificate of Origin. You just have to get through to someone who can issue one. (It can be issued in duplicate.)

Just to close this out, I eventually got the MCO and got car fully registered. I also got the car finally registered in the App, and it finally shows as delivered on the Tesla website. Tesla is supposed to come tomorrow to address the 2 issues from delivery (dented door sill plate and condensation forms in all 4 of the rear lights. Only thing after that will be to get the credit to show for using my referral code and getting the free year of supercharging for taking delivery by Sept 30, which I was told I qualified for and should be getting. I hope others' delivery goes smoother.

Glad to hear you’ve gotten some resolution. I got emailed by the infamous Hector last night re delivery into NH. Sort of dreading this, but have given him a list of my concerns. Unfortunately they’ve got a unique product and it sounds as if they are just slammed. Did you have Hector, and if so did he come through in the end?

For some more perspective, we upgraded our Apple Watches last month and wanted to transfer over some warranty coverage. Called Apple Support and they were slammed, couldn’t help. They took my name and said they’d get back, they did, 2 weeks later. So I totally get that companies with a hot new product have trouble supporting the rush. I’ll just try to roll with the punches and not get too upset.

Happy to hear it finally worked out. I totally agree with your sentiment. I'm Taking delivery at My Kisco very soon and I'm more apprehensive than excited and that shouldn't be the case. Most of us support the Tesla Vision and want Tesla to succeed but they have to at minimum get the basics right. HIRE PEOPLE TO ANSWERE THE PHONE. HIRE CUSTOMER SEVICE SPECIALISTS AND OMBUDSMAN TYPES WITH SOME BASIC AUTHORITY. I've been on hold without any way to leave a message. How can someone complete a somewhat complicated purchase without speaking to a person to resolve questions and problems quickly.

FWIW I took delivery Sep 1st, and 2 months later my car doesn't show as delivered and my referral code is still showing pending delivery. I got tired of chasing Tesla for 2 months, so good luck.

I've been complaining about these exact communications issues since 2013, FWIW, and it seems that Tesla has made exactly zero progress.

I therefore expect that Tesla will never, ever get this stuff right.
