Will the S model be priced too high?

I think one thing worth noting when comparing he 3 and the S is that the 3 will likely be a lot more reliable. Tesla will have to.. The kind of mess that we saw with the S and the X will send Tesla bankrupt.

Why are you comparing a Model S with $24K+ worth of options/upgrades against a baseline Model 3? Seems to me the comparison should be $66K vs $37.5K, which is less than twice the price.

Absolutely, gotta compare apples to apples. I'm a little confused though, I thought 3's starting price is going to be 35K. Where did the other 2.5K come from?

As @proven points out just above, Elon did say something to the effect that this S/X would always be better than the 3 in some unspecified ways.

The point Elon was making was simply that new tech options that they can't mass produce in a cost effective manner will appear in the Model S/X first and then later in the Model 3 when they can be mass produced and at lower cost.

AFAIK he did not say the Model S will be "better" than the Model 3, simply that it'll have more costly options until they engineer a better solution. Basically... rich people are guinea pigs and the masses will get the fruits of that labor.

I’ve had several friends ask me, as a Tesla owner, what the difference will be between my S and the MUCH cheaper 3 (basically $90K+ versus sub$40K).

If you are going to use the 3's starting price, you need to use the S's starting price: $35K vs $66K.
