In tinkering with hopes of somehow allowing my trunk to close a bit further into the car body to better align with tails lights, I found these. Both plastic caps come off with a decent amount of twist effort. I thought they were to adjust the amount of trunk surface that would lower into the car's body; i.e. twist to raise or lower trunk travel distance. But it appears that is not what they are for. One has the lose, silver nut that was just lying next to the screw stem. How it had not fallen into the bottom of the car is beyond me. Just what are these and what may they be used for?

I'm not sure what they are.... but, twist the black plastic knobs on the tailgate itself to adjust how much the trunk closes. The adjustable black plastic knobs land onto the parts you have been adjusting (when the trunk closes). That's my understanding....

Yes, used the rubber type knobs above the object in the posted picture. I was able to allow the trunk to close a tad more, but still not enough to align the tail lights on trunk and body perfectly. I had service look and they made adjustment at the attach points, but still not quite enough. I’m going to leave as is before something is made worse. The bolt in the picture goes unknown. Forgot to ask/show service.
