Hi there - not sure if this is the right thread to post this (this is my first ever on TMC). I live in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada and I’m thinking of buying a 2010-2012 Roadster (these are the years currently allowed for import). There seems to be a very limited supply of Roasters available in Canada and I’m thinking of importing one from the US. I’ve read everything I could find here and elsewhere about all the changes needed to have a US car road ready in Canada. I’m looking for advice: is Tesla the only company that can make changes on the car, or are there other companies in the US or eastern Canada who can do the work? Any advice on how to source the parts to meet all Canadian rules? I’m thinking of buying the parts before buying the car. Any help is appreciated.

Start with the speedo. you need a km/hr speedo before you gp any further, the airbag sticker you can print yourself, the immobilizer will depend on the testing station, the schematics show an immobilizer so you can get away with it, the side lights you can add some led strips inside the lights. Its doable but the big problem is the speedo, tesla do not have any more, the last one sold to someone in London, Ontario. I tried to but it 2 years ago but got stonewalled.

Does the odo need to be km also (or is it selectable already)? Wondering if replacing the applique is feasible.

I may indeed. I have researched this extensively! The Lotus speedos cannot be used as the warning lights are all different. I looked at getting a new face-plate made and there is a company here in the UK who could do it for less than the price of a new MPH speedo from Tesla (who still have UK style MPH speedos but not km/h ones). Though it is easy to get the clear plastic cover off, the needles are firmly welded to the spindles and I could not remove them. I have taken advice from an instrument specialist who thinks that he may be able to remove them but cannot be sure that he could do so without damaging the motor drives and he does not recognise the particular motors and does not therefore have any spares. I have all but decided to buy a new one from Tesla, if I do, I will be open to offers for my km/h one.

I have heard of a cluster f@#k but never a cluster swap!
I will try anything once though ;)
It would need to be soon though, I need to get my new baby on the road. Not quite ready yet though....

Yeah, usually, the shafts stick through the motors to prevent loading the bearings when the pointers are added. Unless there is enough shaft showing to grab with pliers, removal could damage it. Theoretically, the motor could be replaced (but probably out of manufacturer)

Less pretty hack: slice the applique from pointer to edge and slide it on that way.
