I posted this in the "MS FSD RIP" thread but it applies here as well...

Could this have anything to do with the AP2.0 settlement that just finished up yesterday? Is this a huge coincidence or was this planned??? Lizard Illuminati?

Sheikh, et al. v. Tesla, Inc.

When and where will the Court hold the Final Approval Hearing on the fairness of the Settlement?

The Final Approval Hearing has been set for 9:00 AM on October 17, 2018, before the Honorable Beth Labson Freeman at the San Jose Courthouse, Courtroom 3, 5th Floor, 280 S. 1st Street, San Jose, CA 91513. At the Final Approval Hearing, the Court will hear any objections and arguments concerning the fairness of the proposed Settlement, including the amount requested by Class Counsel for attorneys’ fees and costs and the service awards to the Class Representatives.

This can't be a coincidence.

Yeah, we need a Tesla centric way back machine. One that takes screenshots of Teslas website and keeps them in a wiki. Ever tried to figure out what options and prices were available on a used Tesla or if the Tech package included folding mirrors or fog lights for a mid-year 2013 Model? Good luck.

They will even change the documents in your My Tesla account, like the warranty or service agreements. They just link to the latest one, not necessarily the one that was valid when you bought the car.

I think this page captures it pretty well for the Model S. We need this recorded for the Model 3 now (there's a page for it but no data there yet).

can you explain what possible connection you think there would be, legally speaking?

That suit doesn't cover FSD at all (and wasn't even decided, just settled)

Oddly, the description page for the Model 3 (Model 3 | Tesla) still says:

"Every new Model 3 comes standard with advanced hardware capable of providing Enhanced Autopilot features today, and full self-driving capabilities in the future—through software updates designed to improve functionality over time."

and

"All Tesla vehicles have the hardware needed in the future for full self-driving in almost all circumstances, at a safety level we believe will be at least twice as good as the average human driver."

Seems like that should make it hard for them to charge anybody for the necessary hardware upgrade for FSD (and, since they no longer list FSD as an option, could mislead folks into thinking that the software upgrades are also included gratis). But, it's Tesla, so I suspect they'll find a way.

Tesla claiming to sell a solution to the enormous unsolved problem of FSD is bizarre. This issue is the best example of a powerlessness and/or incompetence of the board of directors. Selling FSD is not a "bridge too far". It's several bridges downriver from the bridge too far.

This lawsuit like all class actions is a joke. Regardless of the merits of the case the car owners get between $20 and $280 out of the $5 million settlement. Who do you think won here? Well the lawyers of course.

It's also possible that internally Tesla have become aware that $3K "FSD" is a loser for them if they know that the hardware capabilities even of AP 3.0 are not going to cut it for FSD.

What if Tesla just discovered in the last month or so that they will need more than 3.0 GPU/CPU upgrades to make this work? What if more sensors are needed? They don't want to sell FSD for $3,000 if the car will in fact need a $10,000 upgrade to make the feature work.

I predict that some Beta features for those who purchased FSD will show up in the next 12 months to keep them at bay. Tesla will quietly start rolling out hardware changes that will actually support FSD at some point down the road.

Another option is Tesla stop over-promising and under-delivering. Maybe they don't put the hardware on the cars or offer the option until they actually have it completely working at least in alpha testing conditions.

But without the free upgrade option. That's the point.

2.5 cars sold going forward don't have the ability to pay 3k for the free upgrade to 3.

instead they will pay a higher price post-delivery to get that upgrade.

To stop selling FSD is a strategic decision that directly impacts a major point in the Tesla story. Saving a few bucks on upgrades would be a tactical decision. You have the tail wagging the dog.

By removing it from their website they now have the flexibility to charge what they want to upgrade any car going forward. They have 100k+ model 3s where they have either presold or stated a final price to be paid to upgrade if you did not initially order.

If you order a model 3 now there is no stated price on what an upgrade to FSD would cost. Perhaps they decided that it was not just a computer upgrade that is needed. Perhaps they would have to swap out cameras and such, adding a lot more to the cost of upgrading existing vehicles. Perhaps they have now calculated that the needed upgrades with labor and such costs more than 5k.

It would have to go one of two ways: refund all existing prepaid customers if they cannot get it to eventually work (and probably throw in something to compensate for the loan) or upgrade the prepaid customer's cars to get it to work.
