The idea is that you never have to think about charging. This is a HUGE task in most countries with so many long stretches without any services for hundreds of kilometres. Battery packs will have to probably double in capacity at the very least to make the Model S truly a replacement for ICE.

Hong Kong could easily get away with 4-6 but Tesla will have to work with government and estates to get them in. Hopefully they can crush some of the sheer stupidity of the management I've seen at so many complexes in HK.

Yes and I think that's the problem. Tesla's edge, and thus the marketability of their EVs, is that they can provide 'ordinary' cars that are as good-looking, as powerful, and as practical as other upper-end everyday gasoline cars WHILST being able to keep their costs, thus selling prices, low enough to compete in the existing market. I think the technology is definitely there, it's not like Mate Rimac is such a super genius (although he is) that he created an amazing approach to boost a car with over 1k horsepower (Electromagnetic Aircraft Launch System, EMALS, on aircraft carriers utilise a 100,000+ horsepower electric motor). I mean if Tesla/Elon wanted to do a car like the Rimac Concept One, they probably could, but it would cost so much and the market would be so niche, that it is not what Tesla is about. http://www.teslamotors.com/blog/secret-tesla-motors-master-plan-just-between-you-and-me
I think the Rimac's Concept One is an amazing car, just like Lamborghini's Aventador, or Ferrari's LaFerrari, or McLaren's P1. But to move down to the mass market means killing the ultra-luxury brand, and it takes a hell lot more manpower, expertise, capital and government support to establish a self-sufficient auto company. It took Elon 10 years to come this far.

She doesn't copy others, she's not limiting EVs to the wealthy, she's doing it for the better good of our future generations, that's why I love Tesla.

Well I guess the Oil companies have deep pockets to fight back. Perhaps the best strategy is to offer these backward thinkers the Gigafactory on the condition that they change the law. Or they could just give it to some more progressive state.
