It really depends upon how long the trip is. Over the last few decades I have driven from L.A. to San Francisco dozens of times. For me it has always been a two stop trip--once for gas and once to eat. Now with the model S it is still a two stop trip--the Lebec/Ft. Tejon supercharger and Harris Ranch supercharger. The time driving is about the same. This is a boring drive, but meeting people at the superchargers makes it more interesting.
This spring we drove from Long Beach to Moab Utah and back--2000 miles, 5 days. There was a long driving day each way. When you are stopping a 4 superchargers in a day it does take a little longer. We planned the trip so that we had a supercharger in the parking lot of motel each night. We could spend the day in the national then get a free charge before dinner.
The Tesla is a great road trip car and using the superchargers makes for an interesting adventure.
