Did you see this news about Nissan Leaf and HECO? $10K rebate.
HECO, Nissan offer $10,000 Leaf rebate

Saw that - they must be trying to clear out inventory before the next gen Leaf arrives. Crazy to think you can pick up a Leaf for around $13k after credits. I also heard on the Tesla podcast that CA had Leafs on lease deals essentially for free, after considering gas savings & the CA rebate. Instead of giving $10k towards Leafs, HECO should offer $2500 to replace the expired HI tax credit.

Article about BYD at the car show. Was interesting talking to this guy. All he boasted about was the range, the lower price than the S or X, not having to wait a year for the 3 and of course the exploding lithium batteries o_O

Chinese car is appearing at Hawaii car show

“This is the very first (Chinese-made) car in Hawaii, and we brought it to the show,” said Erik Soderholm, whose dealership landed the franchise for BYD two weeks ago. “We have several people interested in buying them. and we’re selling it in the high $50,000s. It has a 250-mile range.”

“All electric vehicles in the world use a lithium ion battery that is volatile, explosive and flammable,” Soderholm said. “BYD has designed its own battery with a chemical makeup called iron phosphate that is not flammable, explosive or volatile. We have a video at the show of a BYD battery on a barbecue, and the battery does not burn.”

I wish I could read the article.

According to the article, only about 5,800 EVs in the State representing less than 1% of total vehicles. If the government wants to increase EV usage, they should bring back the state tax credit, especially since the federal credit for those buying an M3 may be lessened/dissolved by the time Hawaii gets them.

Tesla, other EV makers, essential in driving Hawaii’s clean energy future

Local media trying to drum up a story will always bring out some kind of negativity.

EV owners don’t need special perks

"Again, it’s stupidity on the part of our local government and the “save the planet” crew that is as misled as our government. It’s the crowd mentality." - Karen - Waikiki

Here's the link to the original article.
EV owners have saved $2.6M in airport parking fees

Also Vote for EV parking at airport in their poll.

Do you think electric vehicles (EVs) should be allowed to park for free at the airport and in other state and city spaces?

Electric cars, new restrictions, to eliminate millions of barrels of oil by 2025, Barclays says

https://www.bizjournals.com/pacific...vECoHFlPJ0bWOFcHw6YrV&t=1507339414&j=78947521

"The Hawaii Clean Energy Initiative, created in 2008, set the goal of 400,000 EVs on Hawaii's roads by 2030. To hit that goal, HADA said, 30,000 of the on average 50,000 new vehicles sold on in state per year would have to be electric powered, which will be a difficult task considering that the current annual sales number for EVs is about 1,000."

Seems like the Hawaii author doesn't really consider that EV adoption is partially hindered by the number and affordability of the existing EVs or how all the major car brands will be introducing a bunch of new EVs over the next few years.

Story about EV charging station bill . Now if only they could enforce it :p
As popularity of electric cars grows, lawmakers want to require more charging stations

This is a good thing but the first thing would be to enforce the current law although I get the feeling that maybe the current law if not well written. According to the article, places with over 100 parking spaces should provide 1 charging stations for every 100 stalls. How else could you explain why places like Ala Moana, Kahala Mall, Ward, etc don't meet this requirement. Ala Moana supposedly has 11,000 or so parking stalls so there should be over 110 charging stations. With all the construction going on at Ala Moana and Ward, it should be easy to require EV charge stations to be put in as a condition of the building permit.
