Happening Now! EV Caught Fire at Fashion Outlets Chicago

Video taken about an hour ago. Still clearing smoke out of the structure. Happened on first floor, Non-Tesla EV. If you can identify it let me know so I can update the video description.

I do have an update, It turns out it was a Hyundai ioniq 5. From the limited information I can gather, besides having the only video of the incident at this time, the vehicle was not charging, and the fire did not start with the battery. Or at least, the HV battery.

If it was a Tesla, definitely would have been plastered on every news source on every news station.

You sure it's an Ioniq 5? Looks more like an Ioniq 6 or something else like a Porsche Taycan or Lucid Air.

I've had 2 people, one posted in video comments, who was also at the Mall during the fire, and another person email me that was at the mall. Both said Ioniq 5, so I'm going by what limited information is available. Will update as I find more information.

Indeed. IIRC, those Ioniq (no number after) were available as hybrid, PHEV and BEV but looked basically the same from the outside. Google for hyundai ioniq phev side then click on Images.

Another update, the major news outlets really are lacking when it's not a Tesla vehicle... Anyway, was about 5 hours to extinguish the fire, use of a special weighted fire fighting blanket was employed, which helped tremendously. Vehicle was towed out of the lot around 1ish pm, into a empty outside lot. Given the scope of the fire, and burn time, I PERSONALLY do not think it was a Hybrid that would have had a much smaller battery. I could be wrong. I'll keep an eye on the news. I may be at the Mall tomorrow. Wifes other friend is one of the owners of UniUni bubble tea there, and yet another owns the Japanese Ramen restaurant at the food court. Going to see if I can get more info.

Sure is! Just got these pictures. Updating info again... Seems my very original idea of vehicle make and model was correct.

These pix show how much of a non-issue an EV fire is. If it were a gasoline fire, there would have been no tires left. It would also have been almost unrecognizable.
Battery fires are dramatic and spew a lot of bad fumes but don't put out a lot of heat.

You can also still see it in the photos, The used a special blanket for EV fires. Reports said it worked extremely well.
One of my viewers, whom works at Fashion Outlets, is reporting though the "magic smoke" smell has permeated Everywhere there.
