Show Off Your Roadster at Tesla Takeover - Aug 2024

There are a lot of free J1772 charging stations in SLO. This is great when one is the only EV driver but I figure with all of the S3XY drivers, most of whom have to pay for Supercharging, the J1772s will be practically impossible to get the necessary hours on one even to get started heading...

Show Off Your Roadster at Tesla Takeover - Aug 2024

How is charging for this EVent, given that waiting for a Supercharger is not an option for a Roadster? Is there any way to reserve one somewhere nearby?
  3. E

Is disabling battery preconditioning now supported?

I can understand howTesla might not want to let you disable preconditioning. If you do, you'll spend more time Supercharging and tie up the stall for longer time. Just conjecture. I have no data or info to support or refute.

Precondition battery for supercharging before leaving hotel

Yep, most hotel chain and consolidator sites tend to be listing EV charging as a search option these day. Charger search sites (such as plugshare) also are offering hotel filtering. They're still a bit unreliable but we are making progress.

Precondition battery for supercharging before leaving hotel

This is why level 2 chargers, that one can remain plugged all night, in at a hotel are the best option. Until hotels have them, just as they do parking (as well as A/C, color TVs, laundry, etc.), they really can't be considered convenient for EVs. This is particularly true on places that get...

Why the extremely large Supecharger sites?

Good points. I wouldn't be surprised if Baker just didn't have enough power coming anywhere near it to handle the EV load. It's basically a crossroads of an interstate with a minor desert road with nothing else nearby. Dragging a new wire from a substation in town is a lot different from...

Why the extremely large Supecharger sites?

Great point, but there are plenty of exits off of I-5 in the wide-open central valley of CA that are quite empty and EV friendly. These are only a couple of hours drive from Tesla engineers so they'd be more convenient test labs. Harris Ranch comes to mind as well as a few others. Quartzite...

Why the extremely large Supecharger sites?

Wow, a commercial real estate magnate! There's a reliable source that can't have any biases. /sarcasm It hardly counters my counter statement: does it.

Why the extremely large Supecharger sites?

This is kind of irrelevant anti-Tesla grousing. As soon as Tesla stations can be used by all, nobody will go waste their time at anything else anyway unless: - the price is much cheaper - its near some amenity they need or want more than what's near the Tesla one. Besides, Tesla usually has to...

Why the extremely large Supecharger sites?

Yup, I was just joshing. Another thing about Quartzite is that it is at the intersection of NV95 and I-10. NV95 is the main south route out of Lake Havasu and Parker recreation areas down to I-10 to the urban areas to the east and west. Folks can top off their Cybertrucks and Lightnings towing...

Why the extremely large Supecharger sites?

Also, remember that Quartzite, AZ has plenty of electricity during peak summer tourist season because the grid is sized for the thousands of snow-birds living in RVs during the winter. I'm sure it was a very cheap to put in a lot - so they did. Its also a good location for charging on I-10...

What's with all the 6 kW public L2 chargers? Why is it so rare to find faster AC charging options?

That's probably sage advise. I just did the run from Phoenix to LA today (in Model 3) and never saw temp above 89F but it was definitely close. Remember that Tesla engineers first solved the hardest problem (batteries), then the 2nd hardest problem (motor), then they had to ship product so...

Anyone in Hurricane country or anywhere else concerned with having both cars be electric?

Your EV: - can be charged from solar - doesn't draw energy when stuck in traffic jams - doesn't count on there being gas at the gas station - doesn't count on your gas station having power to run the pumps - can easily get you far enough away from the coast enough that the hurricane doesn't...

What's with all the 6 kW public L2 chargers? Why is it so rare to find faster AC charging options?

The Roadster Universal Mobile Connector provides 40A from a NEMA 14-50. There aren't a lot of roads other than interstate along much of this route.

What's with all the 6 kW public L2 chargers? Why is it so rare to find faster AC charging options?

That is certainly doable. I did a 600 mile roadtrip 2 years ago in our Roadster. It took a lot of patience and one overnight stop but did work.

    Berlin VT supercharger nightmare

Austin TX and nearby places were worried about running out of gasoline. At least electricity is sourced from widespread areas, not just the tanks in the ground. I don't know if there were actually any issues, I ensured I didn't have to use a Supercharger on Monday.

I also mentioned the temperature. Try to use your iPad while it is sitting on the dash of your car in TX in the summer. I actually like the glass. Sure, its a cost cutting measure but it also makes the car feel more roomy. I just wear a hat when I drive in hot places at noon. You can also...

What's with all the 6 kW public L2 chargers? Why is it so rare to find faster AC charging options?

Chill out dude! Besides, it's actually 240v +- 10% or something thereabouts. Therefore 240v can be as low as ~216v. 208v isn't much below that. I've used many 240v and 208v EVSEs over the decades and it really doesn't matter that much. Ambient temperature and driving speed will affect your...

What's with all the 6 kW public L2 chargers? Why is it so rare to find faster AC charging options?

Yep, that's what I said. I mentioned nothing about the socket. It's a practical problem with using a normal outlet to charge a car. That was one of the reasons that the NEC and SAE pushed so hard for EVSEs instead of counting on wall outlets.

It's way too early to know this since the CT isn't up to full rate production yet. I'm sure they are losing money on the CT now as they trickle out slowly and, I'm sure, tweak the performance of the assembly line, supply chain, and possibly even the design.

Show me a $99 iPad that will operate at the temperatures inside a car during the summer and can be seen in bright sunlight. Clearly, you know little about industrial grade hardware. The biggest joke is that you claim to be from space where the hardware constraints are even tougher.

Assuming a 200 KWh battery is required for a truck with barely-acceptable hauling/towing capability: With this data, that is $28,700 for the battery in 2023. Can one make money selling a pickup with this huge cost today? I don't know. Hopefully, GM does.

    Silverado EV

That's total ignorant (or other) nonsense. Tesla as a company lost money, yes. But it was on the company, not the vehicles since they were plowing everything back into growth instead of turning it out as profit. This is typical and expected for startups. They had great margin on...

how is this relevant? (not disagreeing though :) ) I fully agree with this as well - once someone actually starts seriously building them again. Remember that GM S10 EVs used to guard the Bush White House (DC capital police) in the early 2000's and Ford's serious entry into EVs back then was...

What's with all the 6 kW public L2 chargers? Why is it so rare to find faster AC charging options?

Don't forget, I consider myself to be an EVangelist so many of my attitudes and pushes are not necessarily in support of my own interests or those of EV diehards, but, rather of those who do not yet drive EVs, many of whom see them as being a hassle. Therefore, I push back on measures by the...

What's with all the 6 kW public L2 chargers? Why is it so rare to find faster AC charging options?

I agree here with exceptions: Large, inefficient EVs (trucks) charging overnight on the road. For cars, in general, I agree, however, as trucks start becoming more prevalent, 11 - 20 KW will be much more necessary for hotels and work fleets. I do agree that, for apartment or workplace...
  28. E

What's with all the 6 kW public L2 chargers? Why is it so rare to find faster AC charging options?

Fun fact: The early Roadsters used AC Propulsion's patented "reductive charging", where they used the motor's windings as part of the transformer for the charging circuit. This way, 20 KW charging was easy and cheap (few additional parts needed) since the active electronics could handle way...

What's with all the 6 kW public L2 chargers? Why is it so rare to find faster AC charging options?

208v -vs- 240v is basically a rounding error. They're basically the same thing with it comes to charging speed. Its the current that matters. Sure there is: It is 8 amps at 120 volts = 0.960 KW which is ~ 1 KW. A lot of EVs had their "Level 1" limit set at 8 amps to minimize problems when...

What's with all the 6 kW public L2 chargers? Why is it so rare to find faster AC charging options?

I have to disagree with pretty much everything you said to some degree or another. First of all, IMHO, a level 2 charger should be assumed to be a parking space and one should expect it to be occupied as long as the person parking there is doing whatever they are parked there for. Level 2...

What's with all the 6 kW public L2 chargers? Why is it so rare to find faster AC charging options?

I seldom use more than about 3KW with my 3 since I share a 50 KW breaker with a Roadster and a back room in the garage with an A/C unit. It tends to work fine for my ~35 mile commute. I seldom ever use the full 19KW on the Roadster since our 19KW EVSE is outside and I usually charge the...

What's with all the 6 kW public L2 chargers? Why is it so rare to find faster AC charging options?

The original Tesla Roadster and early Model S supported ~20 KW AC charging. That was before DC Fast Charging (Supercharging) was a thing. There has always been a tradeoff between AC and DC charging. It actually is a tradeoff between onboard and off-board chargers. With AC charging, one...

Given GM's track record of selling EVs at a loss, then killing them because they were losing money, it isn't clear history will support this notion. I certainly hope so though. Very naively spoken. Clearly, you just fell off the turnip truck if you think that the ICE carmakers' (as a whole) haven't been trying to kill of EVs from the beginning. Having had my 1st EV taken away from me to be crushed, I've lived through it. However, that wasn't really a conspiracy. It...

I agree, however, I don't recommend using any strange 3rd party adapters such as the one shown. This isn't 5v/500mA USB here. You're playing with high voltage here and little things can cause bad problems.

Wiki Largest gaps between Superchargers on US Interstates

It isn't surprising that there are a lot of large V3 gaps on the more major routes. Tesla, wisely, covered these earlier with Superchargers before they had any V3s. The policy of adding V3 but not upgrading the V2 sites leads to this. Fortunately, a V2 isn't too bad and one can make good time...

Ford says owners can start using superchargers today (Feb 29)

Hardly a huge sacrifice. There just aren't that many Ford Lightnings out there compared with the number of Teslas. By the time there are a lot, there will be more chargers and they will have ports in the right place.
  48. E

Ford says owners can start using superchargers today (Feb 29)

Tesla's shorter cords, enabled by port location standardization is one of the cheap ways Tesla has been able to have cheaper and more reliable chargers than the rest though. They don't get run over or dropped as often by folks struggling with heavy, long cables.
  49. E

Ford says owners can start using superchargers today (Feb 29)

There's a big difference between parking all or part of a day and blocking a 2nd charger for the half-hour that they must until we get the charge port locations sorted out. I think this is just another EV growing pain we'll have to endure for a while.
