These are both rather old (2015), but since they come from such an august source (HBR) I found them to be wonderful examples of just how otherwise "smart" people have gotten Tesla so hopelessly wrong (and for so long).

Worth a laugh, but, wow, you have to wonder what the heck the authors were thinking:

Why Tesla Won’t Be Able to Scale

The Future of Electric Vehicles Is Golf Carts, Not Tesla

Wow, wow, wow. The first article is a classic example of why Elon doesn't like MBAs. The author is so cocksure of his theoretical ideas - pronouncing things that he supposes as if they were fact. His main mistake was thinking that "people who like electric drivetrains" were a niche. He never asked himself WHY those early Tesla adopters liked electric drivetrains. If he had, he would have realized that there was a huge market when Tesla came out with a cheaper car.

He also simply assumed that Tesla was a high cost manufacturer simply because Teslas were high cost. If he had, I don't know, actually researched Tesla, he would have discovered that Tesla was actually a low cost manufacturer.

The whole thing felt like a person who had preconceived notions and was too lazy to check his assumptions.

The second article is even worse. The author seemed to have missed that even in 2015, China had more middle class people that could afford a $35K EV than the US had.

Same author for both articles. He currently works at McKinsey of course. A high paid consultant. Woe is any company that hires him.

Yes, in general there was (is) a continuing theme amongst the experts on how Tesla wasn't going to make it, had no market, etc.

Frankly, in the face of so much professional negativity it's beyond amazing what Elon Musk and the Tesla team managed to pull off, especially as it was even harder back in 2012 and 2013 when they started with the Model S. (Not to mention 2008 with the original roadster and global supply chain that was a killer weight around them with so many changes needed and a pipeline full of the wrong parts already on their way.)

Yes, Elon believes six impossible things before breakfast, and then makes them come true.

I can't wait to read this book which will give us a blow by blow account of the early days of SpaceX, where we will hopefully get a glimpse of the impossible creation engine.
