It wasn’t an EV that caused the ‘Fremantle Highway’ to catch fire.

Even though the cause of the fire is still unknown, the EV theory no longer holds up after the freighter was inspected.

The lower four of the twelve decks are essentially undamaged, and about 1,000 cars, including the 498 electric ones, are in good condition.

This is according to the chief of salvage company Royal Boskalis Westminster NV, Peter Berdowski.

People are making a conjecture that this source says 500 odd EVs were undamaged combined with a different source saying there were about 500 EVs on the vessel. No report has explained what the source was or that it was or was not an EV. Reaching either conclusion is a guess with the data supplied.

It doesn't seem that EVs were the Grillers on this occasion & has since been reported that all EVs were on a lower deck than the fire:

According to the head of the salvage company, the four uppermost decks, on which there were no electric cars, are so damaged that it is hard to walk on them and that the vehicles there (no EVs) are literally fused to the ground. The affected carmakers are now investigating how their vehicles can be moved".

That's narration interpreted by pro-EV news sources, not direct quotes. The actual quotes confirm the numbers of cars, that the fire seemed to start on the 8th deck and that

“We don’t know what the source was of the fire,” Berdowski said. “Having said that, I think all experts with any knowledge on this topic agree that the transportation of electric vehicles introduces additional risks,” he said.

Pro-EV press is jumping to conclusions just like the anti-EV press is. As bad as each other.

Like I said, personal opinion I would bet it's down to something other than their cargo, but it's too soon to jump to conclusions. Imagine how foolish people will look if it transpires that it was an EV that had a mishap prior to loading (that damaged the battery) and was put in on an upper deck.

Further pics in this article. Don't look great. Some fire damaged Taycan there too. So much for the the 498 undamaged EVs...

No further reports on the official cause either.
