But if they go from reporting a number during your annual inspections to gaining access to your data electronically via the tesla account so that it is a uniform approach would that not impinge on your freedoms? What other data will they require? We have seen government officials trying to push online laws who cant explain what “metadata” is.

Well I think any push to access realtime vehicle data is extremely unlikely, not only because any party proposing it would probably be thrown out of office or never elected in the first place, but it wouldn’t work universally e.g. some are pushing back against Chinese made EVs having any connectivity at all so that they can’t send any data back to the PRC - which would mean Government here couldn’t access any vehicle data either 🤣.

The annual inspections are only required for vehicles over 5 years old :)

There’s a very easy solution to that - make annual reporting voluntary before 5 years, but mandatory at the time of sale if the vehicle is sold prior to 5 years.

If you don’t make a report, then you’ll get charged the RUC for the average distance driven per year in NSW, which is 12,000 km. At year 5, you get a true-up bill once a Registered Inspection Station reports your actual odometer reading to RMS.

This would likely lead to self-reporting for those who do less than 12,000 km per year, and no reporting from those who do more. But those people would get a very nasty bill at Year 5. Would that really be smart? Some people might think so, but whatever. I don’t think it would matter in the bigger scheme of things. The government will eventually get their money.
