I don't think Elon Musk ever completed the full cross country trip. On March 31, 2014, he tweeted that he had stayed at the Rocket Motel near Mt. Rushmore and mentioned a sudden blizzard affecting travel.

He apparently hopped aboard his Dassault Falcon 7X in Rapid City, SD and flew back to California. He was reported to be at the premiere of HBO's Silicon Valley in Redwood City a few days later on April 2.

Perhaps this is what led to the divorce.

It's probably more likely Elon's work schedule. He's super dedicated to changing the world. This gives him very little time to work on relationships. Any normal human would crack under all that pressure.
