I've never had it do that. I've watched a few times and it raises to standard at about 30 mph. Tire wear is not a problem if the other alignment angles are correct--particularly toe. You absolutely don't want any toe-out in the rear.
Interesting. Well I'm pretty sure mine stayed at low - what caused me to realize this was when I was on a recent trip. I stopped at a SC and another MS owner asked if I always drove my S in Low. I said "no" without realizing he was actually telling me it was in Low. He proceeded to politely tell me how he had learned not to do this (reasons mentioned in other comments). Then it dawned on me as I left the SC and I started watching the behavior of the car. I haven't paid as close attention since the last update but I will check it out this weekend.
