2015 P85D rear drive unit: coolant on speed sensor = warranty replacement ?

2015 MS P85DL+

75,000 miles

8-year Tesla Extended Warranty expires in 5 weeks.

Just verified coolant on the rear drive unit speed sensor (see pictures).

How do I get our local SoCal Tesla Service Center to replace this under warranty?

We love our P85D which we bought new 7 years & 11 months ago.

What about asking them?
Obviously I could call our local Service Center but...

I asked our local Service Center to check this when I had our P85D in a couple of weeks ago for a couple of other warranty repairs including:
  • abnormally loud "gear whine" in the front drive unit (acknowledged it was louder than every other MS 85D but refused to resolve since it hadn't failed)
  • rear handles intermittently not deploying ("couldn't replicate")
  • charge port randomly failing to release Tesla wall connector and Supercharger plugs ("couldn't replicate")
  • inspect rear drive unit speed sensor for coolant (ignored)
Another TMC MS owner had success getting his LDU with coolant leak replaced under warranty and hoping for the same warranty replacement he got: Oct 26, 2022

Last month I took my 2015 P85D with 75,500 miles to Tesla Costa Mesa SC with a short list of repairs including asking them to pull my P85D's rear Large Drive Unit ("LDU") speed sensor and check for coolant since this is a known issue. They didn't so I took it to the awesome guys at QC Charge in Vista, CA (SoCal) and paid them to pull my LDU speed sensor, test drive my P85D, and look over my P85D for any other issues I should bring up under warranty. QC Charge noted 2 issues:

I created another Tesla SC Service Request, took it in a showed them my 2 pictures of coolant on my rear Large Drive Unit speed sensor (shown below). SC Adviser confirmed coolant leak and replaced my LDU under my 8-year extended warranty.

Concern: Customer states: Something Else - Coolant on LDU speed sensor verifying seal compromised requiring LDU replacement
Technician Verified customer concern and found coolant residue in the encoder sensor. Technician removed and Replaced Large Rear Drive Unit, performed multiple coolant air purges and performed firmware update, technician test drove vehicle after repairs and verified vehicle operating properly at this time, no further repairs needed at this time. Performed a four wheel alignment to tesla specification.

Correction: General Diagnosis

Correction: Drive Unit - Rear - Large (Remove & Replace)

Parts Replaced or Added
  • ATF, QUART(1031106-00-A) 3.00
  • COOLANT, ETHYLENE 5.00 GLYCOL, 50/50 MIX(1029320-00-A)
  • SIDE MOTOR MOUNT 1.00 ASSEMBLY(1028034-00-B)
  • ASSEMBLY - REMAN - 1.00 SPORT REAR DRIVE UNIT - LDU(1025598-00-T)
  • NUT HF M24X1.5 [8.8] ZNFL- 2.00 W(1020297-00-A)
  • WASHER SAFETY 2.00 M24X39(1020296-00-B)
  • ASY,HV 1.00 COVER,INVERTER(1003783-00-B)
HOWEVER Tesla refused to replace my front drive unit ("FDU") which has a VERY noticeable worn primary drive gear bearing WHINE, especially at 25 to 35 MPH in Range Mode (which basically makes my P85D front wheel drive). They admit it's there but "not significant enough warranting replacement".

My Tesla 8-year Extended Warranty expires July 31st.

Any suggestions for getting Tesla to replace my FDU under warranty?

You should speak to a representative at the California Bureau Of Automotive Repair regarding how Tesla Service initially refused to inspect the rear motor for a known issue.

They have an office at 16735 Von Karman Ave, Irvine, CA 92606.
