Apple abandons self driving car/says it’s not technologically feasible to achieve L5

I had mentioned up thread, but Apple is almost never first with any technology. They wait until someone else figures it out and then they copy that, sometimes so blatantly, they get dinged for infringement. …but that is another story.

FSD v12.x (end to end AI)

It’s hard for me to be sure because FSD behavior is not consistent, however, moving out of passing lane only seems to happen for me when FSD detects a vehicle close behind. That tends to stop working when rain is covering the rear camera. At least that is how it seems to work for me.

    FSD Beta v11.x

I was surprised yesterday when 11.4.7 slowed for a rabbit crossing in front of the car.
  4. J

    FSD Beta v11.x

I have had an issue with this and previous versions where the car would wait in the middle of the intersection at a unprotected left signal. While this is very human like, it doesn't want to clear the intersection when the light turns yellow or even red creating a block in the intersection...

    North America map update

I would make sure that you have reported the missing road on TomTom mapshare, Google and open street map. No one seems to know which on or one’s Tesla uses

Apple Music QR code not appearing

It did for me, but unfortuntely you have no control on when you get an update.

Apple Music QR code not appearing

Nothing was loading, just blank white screens so I logged out. After that, I was not given the login QR code until I received an update. I did try a couple of reboots.

Tesla replacing ultrasonic sensors with Tesla Vision

Of topic, but the bing chat actually sites sources that you can verify so it’s very different than ChatGPT.

    CCS Retrofit Availability (2023)

I’m thinking this is not good new for the “early 2023” that was in the notice before.

    CCS Retrofit Availability (2023)

…seems like the CCS Retrofit notice is gone from my service menu this morning. Anyone else still see the notice that has a car in need of retrofit?

Tesla replacing ultrasonic sensors with Tesla Vision

This works because the traditional rain sensors are actively sending IR out and measure the return. The IR spreads across a large area of the windshield so a tiny emitter/sensor can detect water on almost any part of the windshield.

Auto high beams still comically bad

…jumping in on this as someone on FSB. My auto high beams work much better then they did even a couple of months ago. They never blind people in front any more. They do sometimes dim when there are reflective signs or barrels, so they seem to have optimized this for false positives instead of...

    FSD Beta 10.69

I can say that I have made around half-a-dozen corrections to TomTom and most of them make it to my Tesla in the next map update. …not sure how we can prove it works.

Apple abandons self driving car/says it’s not technologically feasible to achieve L5

If you got back in Apple's history, they are almost never first. They where not first with 5G, Wifi 6, Graphical user interfaces, touch screens or pretty much anything else. What they are good at, is figuring out when a technology is ready for cost effecctive mass production and then jumping...

    FSD Beta 10.69

I went for a drive in light rain tonight and FSD worked well, but what really suprised me where two things. My automatic wipers also worked well in the dark and my auto highbeams dimmed for cars in a sensible, human like way. I had one false dimming for a bunch of reflective construction...

Tesla replacing ultrasonic sensors with Tesla Vision

On place where vision my work better then ultrsonics may be with bolards, signs and other narrow objects. There is a local convience store where autopark tries to run over the bolards and get closer to the sidewalk.

    FSD Beta 10.69

I didn't get the earlier 10.69 versions, but I find 10.69.2 to have more phantom breaking then my previous FSD build. A couple of other things I noticed. Driving directly into the sun this evening, I got a couple of take over immediately notices and a message about system failing. The take...

Auto High Beam making Autosteer unusable

My first night driving FSD Beta and it seems like the auto high beams seems pretty good. I don’t want to read too much into one drive, but I was wondering if others have noticed this.

    Autosteer would not disengage

    Sounds like lane departure assist.

    Autosteer would not disengage

When the car was new, I mixed up the clean windshield on the left with the emergency brake on the right at around 15 mph. …won’t do that again. It is pretty effective.

    New Map Update NA-2022.28-14046

I would see off you can update this in TomTom Mapshare. https://www.tomtom.com/mapshare/tools/new/mapshare/ It's probably a stupid restriction like no right turn allowed at that intersection that is wrong the map data.

    FSD Beta 10.12

The other place where this is a problem is coming out of parking lots. I know it isn't really designed for this now, but if you activate FSD in a parking lot, it will usually barrel out into the road at full speed like it has the right of way.
  27. J

    FSD Beta 10.11

Hmm, hadn't noticed this before, but my car does the same on FSD. ...makes me wonder if internally the car is thinking 12 meters per second.
  28. J

    FSD Beta 10.10 Release Notes

I half agree with this. In the daytime with clear visibility, 10.10 seems a bit better with the exception of merging. I do agree that night driving has taken a step back and is now as bad as some of the pre 10.8 versions.
  29. J

    FSD Beta 10.10 Release Notes

mine didn't even come with phantom braking. The car just decided to throw up the red wheel and loud beeping until I tugged the wheel. The only thing I can think of, was I was in a rural area where it was pitch black except for the car headlights.
  30. J

    FSD Beta 10.10 Release Notes

I tend to agree with that the merge behavior has changed. ...had 10.10 miss 2 merges that where fine in 10.8. FSD was driving down the merge lane with the signal on, so it was planning to change lanes, but we have many short merges in this area and this is not working as well.

Suspected repeater camera defect that affects FSD performance

...just thinking about the early Model S/X needing new cameras and this issue. I'm wondering if Tesla is not upgrading these because someone might think additional upgrades might be need with the cameras in the future? As a Beta FSD tester, there are times where the car want to jump into...

    2021.44.30.6

I've always been on Standard and I only get the builds that end up going out to majority of cars. This works perfectly for me. Even in the FSD Beta, I skipped the emergency braking build that had to be recalled. I believe the problem is that everyone on Advanced thinks that means they should...

Are the cameras on the FSD good enough so that I don't have to worry about things like it clipping another car that's on the road?

As someone that has the Beta, the Beta FSD software gives much more room to parked cars and works much better on narrow streets. I don't think it's a camera problem, the standard software just didn't handle these situations well and I wouldn't trust it. The beta handles these situations much...

Red lines vs blue lines in visualization

It's hard to be sure from your description, but I believe you are seeing the normal visualization on highways and the red lines are the FSD Beta visualization, but you only get that on non-highway portions of drives.

    Heating and cooling batteries

The sound is probably the cabin fan that now runs after a driver to dry the a/c coils so they don't smell. As mentioned by others, the heating and cooling of the battery will generally only occur during preheating or charging the car.

    Rhode Island Inspection Recommendation?

I got my model 3 done a Central Garage in Jamestown. They where a bit grumpy and struggled with the lack of diagnostic port, but I have my inspection done. At least you wouldn't be the first one they have seen.

    FSD 10.5 Issues

I have had this, but only on a 2 mile bridge near me. The car constantly wants to go to the "faster lane." The bridge has a 40 MPH speed limit and I keep it close to the speed limit, but people commonly go much faster, so being in the high speed lane is a mistake. I did let it go the other...

Battery Warming Icon in New App

I have seen it, but I'm going from memory because my battery is warm now. I think it was by the a battery indicator on the main screen. A small red indicator. Also, the charge bar will be orange colored instead of green. I'll try to remember to update this tomorrow if my battery is cold in...

FSD Beta Videos (and questions for FSD Beta drivers)

...wondering how many of the bad cornering problems would be fixed by having FSD disengage when the accelerator is pressed, just like when the brake is pressed. ...seems like a few of the videos I've seen where accompanied by words like, "I had to give it a little push..."

Pro Tip: Setting the climate 71F or lower uses less energy in hot weather

My heat pump and my model 3 both have variable speed compressors. If you start the a/c and listen you can actually hear the compressor slow down as the interior temperature gets closer to the set point.

Discussion: Tesla Vision system for Model 3/Y

My experience with the system in winter is that it is useless when snow and ice cover the radar. I’ll be glad if it isn’t used this winter.

Cabin Temperature Protection - What's it REALLY for

It may be a strange concept for some, but my car will often sit for a couple days without moving. If it was really for system protection, either battery or interior electronics, I would hope I had the option to run it anytime the car is plugged in instead of stopping after 12 hours.

Karpathy talk today at CVPR 2021

There is a trade off of resolution and light gathering. The higher the resolution, the more light you need for the smaller sensor, or you need a bigger more expensive sensor and lens. We tend to get sucked into the bigger numbers are better marketing game, here in the US anyway, but higher...

    Newport RI area chargers

There are a lot of level 2 public chargers in Newport, Middletown. I would check PlugShare, though most of them are on the ChargePoint network so you may want to get that app as well. The visitor center, library, a state park, the hospital all have public charging and most of them are free.

Elon tweets "pure vision" will solve phantom braking

I wonder if any of this is driven by the global chip shortage. I believe someone mentioned it, perhaps in a different thread, but if Tesla cannot get enough RADARs, then Elon says we don’t need them. …most of the the time he, eventually, turns out to be prophetic, but the question is how will...
