That's probably not true. I was able to simply provide insurance information for my current non-Tesla car to get past that phase. My MY is enroute as we speak.

I was hoping to maybe track the movement of my MY from the factory to the dealership to me but didn’t see anything like that in the source code.

Go to Manage your reservation, click Overview, and then right click and select the “view page source” option. If you use the CTRL F (find) you can search for your VIN which always starts with “5 YJ”

Maybe that test drive car was one turned down by a worry wart that couldn't pull the trigger when it came time to commit.
