It looks like the Model Y RWD 2022/2023/2024 with the CATL 6L LFP 62kWH pack was just software locked to just below 60kWh with OTA Update 2023.38.8!
Tesla usually does this if there is a competing battery pack in the same market with less capacity. In this case there is the BYD Blade 7C which has about 2kWh less capacity than the CATL.
This is not a first during Christmas time actually. Back around Christmas time in 2020, we Europeans received Christmas update 2020.48.12.1 which promised increased range indication in the car. M3LR in that time came either with Panasonic 3 NCA 77,8kWh or LG Chem 5 75,9kWh. The update locked the Panasonic to 75,4kWh by applying a voltage limiter from 4,20V down to 4,15V. The naming also changed to Panasonic 3C for locked cars from the factory. That way both packs, LG and Panasonic, were equalized. Tesla also reduced the consumption constant from 152,5Wh/km down to 137Wh/km so the customer would actually see a higher range after the update while actually having less capacity -> Less real world range.
This is happening again right now, as it seems.
After the update, the Model Y RWD with CATL pack still shows 418 km/260 miles in the first months after delivery, but this is due to a reduced consumption constant. The usable capacity is not 61-62kWh anymore, but only 59-60kWh.
To find out if your car is affected by this, you can do the following:
- Charge your car to 100% SOC
- Note the rated range in km next to the battery icon
- Go to your energy monitor and select consumption on the top right
- Now select average on the bottom right
- Now multiply range with consumption and divide the result with the rated range noted earlier
These are the possible results:
- 19" Wheels -> ~146,0 Wh/km -> No software lock, business as usual
- 20" Wheels -> ~156,0 Wh/km -> No software lock, business as usual
- 19" Wheels -> ~142,5 Wh/km -> Software lock applied! You have about 2kWh less capacity now!
- 20" Wheels -> ~152,5 Wh/km -> Software lock applied! You have about 2kWh less capacity now!
