Diesel cars in the US have mostly appealed to frequent long distance and uber miles per year car owners.
Current or even horizon EVs are not a practical consideration, even at ICE level prices.
The EU is very different, and that is the turf where diesel survival will play out.
There it is all about protecting local industry (mostly German,) and diesel subsidy on one side, air pollution in the big cities on the other. So far, the air pollution side is losing and the fight is not even close.
