Off topic posts about student debt forgiveness (many snippy)

I'm curious about something. This is a Tesla forum. People have expensive cars in their profile pics, multiple cars listed in their tag line, etc... Yet they are talking about how much debt their kids have from school. Do parents not feel an obligation to help their children with college...

I enlisted in the Army for 4 years to get the G.I. Bill and save money for college. I want 4 very difficult years of my life back.

    No post delivery collision repair?

One of our Model 3s had a mishap today and the nose and hood took a good hit. The bumper cover needs replacing as well as the aluminum bumper underneath and the two mounting arms that mount the bumper to the frame. A bunch of other little bits and parts are needed as well. I opened the app...

Sneak peek of my Tesla garage

This thread is really old. I tried looking for the vendor I got the logo from but couldn't find it. I got it from ebay though. The seller worked with me to make a custom size for my needs. It's a vinyl logo with adhesive backing.

I think people see COVID numbers heading in the right direction. Tech stocks were a safe place to put your money during the pandemic. Now people are moving things out of tech and into recovery stocks. Airlines, hotels, theaters. All these stocks are up.

That was one of many tweets addressing the problem. He basically said, nuclear didn't work because safety sensors froze. Gas didn't work because there wasn't enough gas supply since wind was expected to produce a portion of overall energy. He kinda summed it up that it was ultimately poor...

The majority of the oil burned by the U.S. Military is due to the Air Force and Navy. Planes and ships are no part of the Biden plan to convert the government fleet to electric. Obviously timeline matters in the context of all this too. If we are talking in the next 100 years, then yeah...

Tesla, TSLA & the Investment World: the Perpetual Investors' Roundtable

Personally I hope Elon steers clear of the government's desire to go electric. Around 400k of the governments 645k are specialized vehicles (military and mail trucks). Tesla doesn't need the distraction. Perhaps some portion of the remaining 250k vehicles can be converted to Model Y or...

A custom tailored hardware solution for doing image processing and specific types of math will always be a better solution than a GPU. A GPU is a custom tailored hardware solution for doing 3D graphics. It just so happens you can write a shader for a GPU that can do image recognition. That...

    When to retire?

To all those contemplating early retirement, you should also investigate the rule of 55. If you don't like the idea of the 72t or it won't generate the income you want, the 401k rule of 55 is also a little know provision. In the year that you turn 55, if you leave work (voluntary or not), you...

    When to retire?

One thing to note is that a 72t doesn't preclude you from making other income. If you decided the 72t wasn't working and wanted to go back to work, you could always bank the 72t income and invest it or use it to augment your work income.
  17. MikeQ

    When to retire?

I'd have to do a Roth conversion and the money needs to stay in the Roth for 5 years before you can withdraw. I'm about to turn 54 so the 72t works for me.

    When to retire?

UHC short term plan. Myself and 2 kids (both 18+ years old) ~$350 a month. Oscar Health Bronze. Wife only ~$550 a month. So $900 a month.

    When to retire?

We are spending about what we spent working. Mainly because we can and don't want to live frugally. We do what we want, when we want. We don't intent to move to a LCOL area, we are in HCOL area now and like it. Health Insurance was a big increase in retirement but it was offset by other...

    When to retire?

Exchange insurance is pretty expensive because they are required to cover pre-existing conditions. If you don't have any major health issues, I'd stay away from the exchange and look into short term plans. They are 12 month plans that you renew each year. They don't cover pre-existing...

Fidelity handles it all for me. I can make changes as to which stock to sell but they automatically distribute the money.
  22. MikeQ

    When to retire?

An interesting note on the 72t (SEPP). The wording that outlines how you can take money out only speaks of 3 methods RMD, annuity and amortized. However, if you read closely, those are just examples. You can come up with your own method but will need to run it by the IRS. I was thinking of...

    When to retire?

My goal has been to move as much out of my IRA as possible so that 1) I can move it into non-ira accounts, reinvest and from that point on pay only capital gains rates instead of income rates. 2) bring my IRA balance down so that by the time I'm 72, I'm not hit with insanely high required...

    When to retire?

This is not what happened to me. In 2018 I decided I'd retire December of 2020. From that point on, I couldn't stand work anymore. Not needing to work made me realize how much I didn't like my job (Engineering). Dragging myself into work became increasingly difficult. I didn't make it to...

Elon tweets "no waypoints", "car will autonavigate to your destination."

I'd really like to see options for a destination. For a particular destination we frequent, the car always picks the worst route and therefore I can't use Navigate on Autopilot. I have to wait until we get to a point in the trip where the car has no choice but to choose the route I would...

I would hope any such merger wouldn't involve taking on the obligations of supporting a dealer's network. One of the things I like the most about Tesla is not having to play dealership games.

How much $ to retire and how to fund your lifestyle in retirement

On your 72t, I'd start with the method that gives you the largest withdraw. If Tesla continues it's massive trajectory, then consider switch to RMD (not to be confused with mandatory RMD at 72). RMD will produce the lowest result but you're allowed a 1 time switch from any of the other...

How much $ to retire and how to fund your lifestyle in retirement

I didn't say I was happy about the taxes, there's just not a lot you can do. One problem with the Roth is that I'm going to have to pay taxes with the IRA itself. I'm probably better of leaving that money in the IRA and letting it grow.
  31. MikeQ

How much $ to retire and how to fund your lifestyle in retirement

Taxes are at historic lows right now so I'm trying to get as much out of my IRA as I can. Once I hit 59.5 I'll start taking as much as I can without blowing out my taxes. RMD has been pushed to 72 so that'll give me 12 years to try to get the balances in the IRA down. There's really no other...

How much $ to retire and how to fund your lifestyle in retirement

I guess it means something different for everyone. I'm not someone who enjoys sitting still. To me just having enough to put a roof over my head, feed and cloth myself, isn't living. It's existing. To me living is being not limited by money. Within reason obviously. The wife and I aren't...

How much $ to retire and how to fund your lifestyle in retirement

If you don't make much in the U.S. then you'd qualify for healthcare subsidies and other programs that would make living on $40-$50k somewhat doable. However, all you would be doing is existing, not living. At $140k, I immediately have to give up $18k for healthcare and $25k to taxes. Take...

How much $ to retire and how to fund your lifestyle in retirement

We live in a moderate cost of living area and there's no way we'd maintain our current lifestyle on $40-$50k. We're looking at more like $140k. I'm going to adjust our 72t to the RMD method of calculating since TSLA has grown quite a bit since we retired. That's going to push us to a budget...

My wife taught 4th grade and 2nd grade until retiring this year. She drove a Model X to school and there wasn't a kid in her classes that didn't know what a Tesla was. Somehow they would find out that she drove one and would ask her enthusiastically about it.

I thought the same way when we developed the first GPU for a cell phone. As a developer, you should know that if you provide more power, people will find a way to use it. source: 20 years developing HW/SW at AMD.

That leaves you with a GPU problem. ARM's Mali isn't powerful enough so you'd need to license or develop your own GPU. Apple has spent 9 years developing their own ARM CPU/GPU combo.

The GPU is being used to render 3d games , maps, UI and browser. MCU1 was ARM based with an Nvidia GPU and it was replaced with the Intel Atom / Cherry Trail GPU (maybe) because the Tegra solution was too sluggish. Elon has made it clear he wants to port more games to the Tesla infotainment...

Exactly. Incentives are no longer needed and just adds to the narrative that EVs NEED subsidies to survive. Get rid of them entirely. Incentives have a place but we are way beyond that.

    Charging at Disney in Florida?

We stayed at the Riviera this week and a white model 3 was parked in one of the ChargePoint spots and plugged in for 3 days straight without moving. If I'd had something to write on, I would have left a note for them. I'm surprised that ChargePoint doesn't have a idle fee system.
