Stalk or no stalk argument [not] settled

If you come back not liking it, go through the Tesla trade-in evaluator and tell us what Tesla is willing to buy back your one month old car for. Will give us some idea how much a return policy would cost them on customers who still hate it a month later.

Stalk or no stalk argument [not] settled

It absolutely makes sense that they cancelled it once demand outstripped production capacity. However, Tesla is now back in the demand less than capacity territory (at least until Elon fires a sufficient percentage of production and supply management staff to match the new, lower demand), so...

Stalk or no stalk argument [not] settled

Exactly, so the only way left to give people cars they will fall in love with would be extended test drives.

Stalk or no stalk argument [not] settled

All test drives are very short term rentals (for free). The longest ones I've seen from Tesla was over the weekend. Furthermore, Elon has indicated in the past that he wants Tesla to give people extended test drives in a form of a loaner while they service their older Tesla, hoping you choose to...

Stalk or no stalk argument [not] settled

Why can't there can be no advantage for someone to abuse , but an advantage to those who will treat this as an insurance, should they not like it, therefore make them more likely to buy? I agree that it might not be worth while. Sometimes it's better to let go of few percent of customers who...

Stalk or no stalk argument [not] settled

I'm curious, how and why would people abuse it? Buying a car, arranging financing, trading in a car, etc is a lot of effort to go through for a joy tide. Say they charge $3,500 restocking fee plus $1 a mile for a Model 3/Y, when you can rent a 2024 Model Y for less than $100 a day? Heck, call...

Stalk or no stalk argument [not] settled

I wonder why they got rid of the 7 day return. They should have added a "restoking fee" 2x-3x greater than what it would cost to rent a similar new Tesla for the 7 days, then pretty much the only reasons to return a car within 7 days are bad quality or you hate the design/features. Maybe the...

Stalk or no stalk argument [not] settled

My last Tesla was a 2018 Model S and DRL's were visible when looking at them, even if the "eyebrows" slowly burned out. As for saving power, all out Teslas turned on headlights in the rain automatically, even though it's not required in our state (it is in California IIRC). So if you turn on...

Stalk or no stalk argument [not] settled

Now explain why people in Teslas drive with DRL's off. It takes explicit effort to turn them off every time you drive (at least in the USA, Canada you cannot disable them at all), why would anyone do it? PS> I already have a theory why Teslas are very often blinding the opposing traffic (I...

    NEW Model 3 Highland review!

Stalkless yoke was the deal breaker for both me and my wife (and she wanted a 3rd Tesla even more than I wanted one). I would have bought at least 1 more Model S and 1 Model X. Yes, but primarily because I recommended some friends and family to buy Teslas, which they still have, and I'm their...

    NEW Model 3 Highland review!

Contradicting statements (from the very same post)? So, it's done and they are not going back, or they might go back if enough people sufficiently dislike it? Perhaps folks on this forum are truing to convince others to stop buying Teslas (which as you said is the most promising lever to force...

    Robotaxi? Really??

Depending how you define it. First Full Self Driving Tesla left the factory in 2016. First RoboTaxi can leave the factory next year no problem, but just like Full Self Driving cars don't self drive, the RoboTaxi won't taxi anyone around by itself, but it will be called RoboTaxi, so goal of...

    Rear trunk won't open

The very first I did when I got my first Tesla was to get a bag of spare clips, IIRC there was 2 kinds. Back in 2013 Tesla charged me $1 per clip, since I learned you can buy the identical clips for Toyota IIRC (perhaps other brands) for pennies per clip. If you work on your car, there is always...

    Rear trunk won't open

Watch the mobile tech perform the service, then look for a good deal on a spare motor over the next couple of years. This way next time it happens, you will be prepared. Working on your own car is not rocket science. The hardest part I think is starting. In this case, if the cinch motor is...

    Robotaxi? Really??

Same swagger Elon had in 2016 telling us about the Tesla Ride Sharing network coming in 2017? Or when he told investors Teslas are appreciating assets? Or when he told people in 2020 that by end of that year there will be a million Tesla robo-taxis on the road? One thing Elon is never short on...

The ultimate demand lever and consumer confidence booster?

I say the board should ask Elon to put his money where his mouth is - he should be granted options to buy 2024 Model 3 Highlands at today's MSRP instead of stock options or grants, expiring by end of this year. He's told the world that Tesla cars are appreciating assets which will be worth...

    Robotaxi? Really??

Elon has historically been able to find naive customers. I was one until 2015 when I realized he will say whatever it takes to sell (he sold me a 700hp P85D - for those who don't remember the past it was just called that, it produced a maximum of 461hp when all stars aligned). People like me...
  19. whitex

    Robotaxi? Really??

Yep, with a safety driver. But hey, Elon will be able to say he delivered on a RoboTaxi (because the car will be called that, like Full Self Driving is called that, doesn't mean it fully self drives or ever will, because it won't, not in the cars it was sold in since 2016).

Model X Crash on US-101 (Mountain View, CA)

Most of what Elon says is false. I say focus on what he does or actually accomplishes, ignore any forward looking statements. This is especially true when handing him any money, make sure you are getting what you paid for on delivery day, and anything else you expect is in writing in official...

There is one way Tesla could untangle it, offer the stalked steering wheel as an option watch the volumes of orders. They could even include the touch buttons as well, then have a driver profile setting of which one you want to use, then monitor the telemetry how many people choose which one. Of...

Stalk or no stalk argument [not] settled

You obviously missed what I said. To prove there has been at least one lost car sale all you need is anecdotal evidence - I can tell you Tesla lost 2 car sales for certain as I would have bought at least one more S and X. I never claimed the lost a lot, because I have no data to support it.
  26. whitex

Stalk or no stalk argument [not] settled

Either are yokes, one is just rounded - still no stalks, still same controls IMO the rounded yoke is the worst of two worlds, but my guess is that majority of people chose it as it's the closest to traditional controls, without realizing until people get the car that it's lacking stalks...

Stalk or no stalk argument [not] settled

We don't have aggregate numbers, but anecdotal evidence on this forum still show little to no examples of anyone buying a Tesla for the stalkless yoke, but definitely a few examples of people not buying a Tesla because of them (in my case alone, at least one Model S and one Model X). So given...

Stalk or no stalk argument [not] settled

What is fascinating to me is that Tesla keeps doubling down on this, while even in this thread it's apparent that this change did not gain them any customers, definitely lost some customers. So to me it seems that either: a) profit from lost customers is significantly less than the savings from...

And now anyone who has 2 Teslas, one with the old signal buttons and one with the new ones will be activating wipers by accident. Stalk or no stalk argument [not] settled

Funny, after 2 consecutive Model S'es my wife really wanted a Model X. After test driving one with a yoke, she went with an Audi EV. She occasionally complains about the Audi deficiencies, to which I often respond, "just say the word, and I will replace the Audi with a new X", and she always...

I know, I don't remember which car I drove which had this. Still worse than traditional stalks IMO.

Stalk or no stalk argument [not] settled

Interesting, all 3/Y's I've ever driven, the stalk never stays all the way in left signal or right signal position - always returns to the center position, even if the blinker is on permanently.

    Matrix Headlights Capabilities Enablement Timeline

Yep, they did. One car I can tell you for certain, Porsche cars with matrix headlights and radar + FLIR sensors (to detect the objects on collision course). I suspect Audi has that too (same systems) as well as other cars. I know Mercedes had that system independent of headlights, I think they...

The current, outside of NA implementation, the high beams only turn on when the road requires extra illumination and above some speed (e.g. 28mph). However, when approach other cars (same direction or opposite direction) the headlights just darken a box around those cars, so it looks as if you...

Stalk or no stalk argument [not] settled

Yep, I eventually just did that. Not quite. They are still momentary switches. Check out how the 2018 or earlier Model S stalks worked - they stay in the directional position when pushed all the way, only blink 3 times (IIRC) if they return instantly when pushed half way.

Stalk or no stalk argument [not] settled

I tried the auto-cancel when I rented a M3 a few times last year. It doesn't work every time. The problem is I never know if it's just late or is not going to work, so on more than one occasion I went to manually cancel it only to re-enable it because auto-cancel cancelled it while I was moving...

    Retrofit interior camera

Neh, they have an out for that one - "subject to regulation". Elon has fine printed his way out of obligations so many times, this one is super simple - "EU made FSD you purchased illegal, but you can buy a new car which has a different, legal FSD".
  42. whitex

Stalk or no stalk argument [not] settled

That's probably it's already "cost optimized, half way to no stalk" Tesla solution. Normal stalks just stay in the left/right signaling position, then move back when automatically turned off. Some also allow you half way position which signals while you hold it there (or 1-3 times even if you...

Stalk or no stalk argument [not] settled

I was fa big fan the one pedal driving of the Teslas for a decade I drove them. Switched to an EV with blended braking instead, and have to tell you, I actually prefer it. Maybe it's because the new EV can regen a lot harder than any Tesla (up to 280KW), but I think it's more because it...

Stalk or no stalk argument [not] settled

By "get used to" do you mean "learn to live with it" or "prefer it"? Either way, the people who didn't get a long enough test drive to get used to it will still be lost sales to Tesla. My wife, after 2 Model S'es and really wanting a Model X, decided against it after test driving the yoke...

General chit-chat in "For Sale" threads

I actually sold a car through that about a year ago. I collected all the offers, then picked the highest one and negotiated it up (had to actually go to the dealer for them to see it in person). I also compared it against carvana, vroom, etc. The range was quite large too - lowest offer was 30%...

Bellevue Location no longer doing deliveries?

Sounds about right. I bought a couple of (non-Tesla) cars in 2023, the tax rate was about that (almost 11%, slightly higher for gasoline vehicles). WA taxes have been going up as people vote in more and more government spending. Just annual plates are costing me ~$4K a year on 4 cars. We now...

Stalk or no stalk argument [not] settled

So works as intended. Elon is expecting EU to start rating for safety while on autopilot, and there signals are automatic, so the difference between manual driving rating and ADAS driving will be greater.

General chit-chat in "For Sale" threads

Go through the "get cash offers" on KBB, it's free, you have to upload some info and pictures, will tell you what the dealers are offering in your area. Be prepared for a reality check though, we all tend to value our cars much higher than the market does.

    NEW Model 3 Highland review!

Yes, but that leaves the other half the people who are still using them, which stalkless will further reduce. Driving tests standards in US are way too laxed. So many people drive their cars like they'd ride a cow - get on it, point it in the general direction where you want to go, hope you get...

    NEW Model 3 Highland review!

You know, that is one point I have not considered - more people will just stop using turn signals altogether. This may not be intuitive, but it will help Elon, as it will make people driving manually have more accidents. I don't have a source handy, but IIRC 2% of all car accidents in North...
