    Quick 4-month new MY report

I'll chime in here as a 5 month owner of a MY RWD. Overall very happy with the purchase and haven't noticed any build issues at all so far. However, my windshield has already needed replacement due to a crack caused by a rock chip. And shortly thereafter I picked up another chip, but luckily it...

USA MY RWD has soft limited LR battery!

It makes no sense to me either that Tesla would limit the charging below advertised, which is why I bring it up. I also agree that Branden is a credible source, but there could be some factor out of his control. I was incorrect in there being only one data point. In the "2024 US model Y rwd...

USA MY RWD has soft limited LR battery!

Isn't it a bit premature to say the 2024 cannot charge at 170kW? As far as I know there is only one data point so that doesn't seem very definitive to me. Also, there are a number of factors why a car can't hit the max speed at a given time or situation. There are times I've seen my 2023 charge...

Anyone with a 2023-24 RWD Y think they’d pay to upgrade to LR?

I don't see myself paying to unlock the capacity as it would be rare for me to ever want to charge past the approximate 90% available in the 2023. Maybe it's a little more enticing for the 2024 cars that have more of the capacity locked.

2023 US MY RWD fog lights

I was never in doubt they were there as I saw them turned on during the light show. However, this confirms there is a way one can actually use them as desired. Not sure if it's worth getting the S3XY stuff just for the fog lights, but it does a lot of other useful stuff and provides a physical...

2023 US MY RWD fog lights

I finally received my S3XY controller and knob and was able to turn on the 2023 MY RWD fog lights with that product. The knob doesn't support controlling the fog lights yet, but I was able to use the app to get the controller to toggle the fog lights. I believe the buttons do support the fog...

Downgraded Audio? Might want to let buyers know [rwd vs awd]

I don't know if you have been keeping up with the discussion on the RWD, but it is essentially the exact same car as the AWD minus the front motor. In 2023, it even had the same premium audio and the battery is the "LR" battery, but it is software capped so when you charge it to 100% it is...

Bought a used Tesla charger off eBay, how do I connect it to my WiFi?

When I acquired my used Wall Connector, I was able to connect with the label on the back. It has both the information you need to manually connect, as well as a QR code you can just scan to automatically do so. Then you point your browser at 192.168.92.1 to access the admin page

2024 US model Y rwd battery type and size

I guess Tesla actually got around to downgrading the max charging speed for 2024. It probably won't make much difference in overall charging time though, as the 250kW charging enabled pack doesn't stay above 160kW for very long.

Downgraded Audio? Might want to let buyers know [rwd vs awd]

Only if those extras have value to the buyer, $3k isn't nothing. The 23 MY RWD was right for what I wanted. Didn't care about faster acceleration and the day to day range is pretty much equivalent to the LR assuming one sticks with the 80% charge recommendation (the RWD can access the same kWh...

Torquing Lug Nuts with Torque Sticks 120ftlbs or 140?

Also, torque sticks are meant for use with air impact wrenches. Battery powered ones impact at a faster rate, they will tighten higher than specified. For tightening lug nuts, I think a $20 Harbor Freight torque wrench is fine. As long as each nut is tightened to a consistent torque, getting...

$89 Tera Level 2 Charger on Amazon

It appears the ETL listing is legit, here is a reddit post with someone's research on this unit: However, the UL part seems to be more of a confirmation through ETL that it meets UL standards rather being tested directly by UL itself.
  13. B

USA MY RWD has soft limited LR battery!

From this curve, it seems to me that the 2024 is using the 82kWh Panasonic pack limited down to about 80% as that's where you would still see a 50kW charging rate. This would also line up with the 2024 EPA testing for the 2024 RWD that lists the battery capacity at 66.5kWh which would be about...

$89 Tera Level 2 Charger on Amazon

For the price I'm going to give it a shot. The listing and a review indicate the unit and cord are UL and ETL listed so it should at least meet some minimum safety standards. I'm not sure these wall adapters are anything more than remote power switches that communicate with the car. The AC...

USA MY RWD has soft limited LR battery!

Please report the charge rates you are getting at higher rates of charge (more than 90%) at a supercharger. If you get similar rates to the one in my first post, that will indicate a software limited battery. If you are getting slow rates as you reach 100% that would indicate full use of a...

    Homelink retrofit install failure

Tesla mobile service installed my Ebay purchased homelink yesterday. Last week I created a service request in the app for installation including a picture of the unopened package, and it was immediately approved and let me schedule. If you try again maybe a different service rep might approve...

Debating the switch to 18 inch wheels from the 20 inch inductions

Saw a good video on exactly this topic. Impressive improvements in efficiency and acceleration. 332wh/m to 280wh/m and 0.2 seconds faster 0-60mph.

Is 2024 RWD pricing already in the sweet spot?

For the 2023 MY RWDs, I don't think I ever saw it below $40k while it was eligible for the rebate. In 2024, I did see some go down to $38k, but without the $7500 rebate, that is a much worse deal. So once the 2024 hits $40k, I would say that matches the best pricing of 2023. If I were shopping...

Why you should skip the powered frunk and grab a Satonic soft close frunk

It sits very high up, as if you gently lowered the frunk down to where the latch was resting on the sensor arm. That registers as fully open so it does not try to re-close the frunk. Good point on the rotation, that'll be the first adjustment I try.

Why you should skip the powered frunk and grab a Satonic soft close frunk

Good to know. Mine came with the plastic insert to restrict the alignment, so that would have to be removed to lower it. The car is new, so both the latch and the soft close springs are tight. I'll probably wait a bit to see if it fixes itself. Also, it came with a metal "patch" for the auto...

Why you should skip the powered frunk and grab a Satonic soft close frunk

Thanks for the report bcarp. Does the emergency release allow the cable to move completely freely, or just releases it partly to allow opening? The auto re-close on my Tylard style unit is not working either. I think it's because the frunk is popping up higher than normal. Instead of a finger...

Why you should skip the powered frunk and grab a Satonic soft close frunk

The V2 has a manual release cable, doesn't it? What happens when you pull it? If it disengages the cable to allow the latch to open then I think the risk of getting the frunk stuck on failure would be low.

    Satonic Soft Close Frunk

The Futhope Type 2 looks to be a different design than the Tlyard
  24. B

    Satonic Soft Close Frunk

From what I can tell from the picture on the Type 2, it looks like the motor orientation will require a worm gear to turn the cable spool and that will prevent the cable from being able to be pulled out manually. If this is the case, it will likely have the same issue as the Satonic if it fails...

Model Y HW4 with OEM Tow Hitch Installed

From what I have read, my impression is that if the car didn't come from the factory with the tow package, the car has to be configured with the Toolbox service software to enable tow mode and power to the module. Tesla service probably won't help you with this, but a 3rd party shop would, or...

2024 US model Y rwd battery type and size

The EPA document shows the test car had less than 3000 miles. I can't imagine there would be any degradation or that they would choose a test car that had a sub-par battery capacity. It seems more plausible that they are stopping the test earlier than they used to. I found some more information...

2024 US model Y rwd battery type and size

I was looking at the test for the 2024 MY LR. I've never seen an EPA doc for the shipped 2023 MY RWD. The capacity has been inferred from what is reported by the BMS through Scan My Tesla.
  28. B

2024 US model Y rwd battery type and size

Ah ok, I thought you were quoting the nominal figure, because the specified 352V * 189Ah = 66.5kWh. I'm thinking that the EPA test does not include the buffer, because if you add the usual 3kWh buffer to 66.5, you end up around the 70kWH of the 2023. For the MY LR EPA test, it shows a...
  29. B

2024 US model Y rwd battery type and size

Do you have specific knowledge of the testing procedure used to list the voltage amp capacity? I could see it being a well matched metric in the usual case when the full capacity of the battery is used, with the manufacturer specification from the raw batteries, but I'm not so sure when they are...
  30. B

2024 US model Y rwd battery type and size

Comparing it to the 2023 EPA doc, it seems to me that the 2023 doc used the LFP battery for the test, while the 2024 test is what you would expect with the software limited LR battery. The tested range is significantly higher for 2024 given the higher usable capacity. And maybe this is why the...

USA MY RWD has soft limited LR battery!

A better way to estimate your battery capacity is to go into the Energy App in the car, view the Consumption tab graph, then: Avg Wh/m (from left) * Projected Range miles (from right) / Battery %. For the most accurate measurement, calculate at a relatively high state of charge to reduce...

Why you should skip the powered frunk and grab a Satonic soft close frunk

I think I'm going to return my Satonic and get a Tlyard style one. The failure mode is kinda ridiculous. Even the newer Satonics with the manual release are less than ideal since some sort of intervention is still needed to deal with a failure.
  33. B

Why you should skip the powered frunk and grab a Satonic soft close frunk

Sounds like a good idea. Do you think you can actually reach the cable from the wheel well? It doesn't seem like the cable has a lot of slack.
  34. B

Why you should skip the powered frunk and grab a Satonic soft close frunk

I played around a bit with my not yet installed Satonic V1 and found that the cable can not be extended or retracted by hand, leading me to believe that the cable spool must be geared instead of direct drive like the Tlyard design (as tested by johnnyruz). This would explain why the cable still...
  35. B

Why you should skip the powered frunk and grab a Satonic soft close frunk

When you were first trying to open the frunk, is it possible that the water was frozen in the cable housing, immobilizing the cable? At least for the Tlyard unit that johnnyruz tested, it doesn't sound like a dead motor or electronics would impede the cable from releasing. Is the cable free to...

2024 US model Y rwd battery type and size

It seems to me that the 2023 MY RWD was a pretty low volume model, since it was only produced for a few months, and it was always a low proportion of the available MY inventory last quarter. If they weren't ready with the parts or process for the intended de-contenting (battery, non fog light...

Why you should skip the powered frunk and grab a Satonic soft close frunk

Not sure, it was just a generic picture in the listing. Though all the MY versions I've seen have cables going to a separate motor/control unit. As far as the manual release goes, I don't think it would stay attached to the motorized soft close cable since it would inaccessible. I would route...

Why you should skip the powered frunk and grab a Satonic soft close frunk

Interestingly, there is now a V1Plus version on the Satonic Aliexpress page, and it looks to have a manual release going to the motor of the soft release itself. The pull mechanism looks like the V2, connecting to the factory latch.

USA MY RWD has soft limited LR battery!

Agreed. I'm pretty sure the extras are not going to be present in the future, maybe as soon as the 2024 models come out. It appears that the top 10% of the battery is limited. So if you charge to 100%, it will physically be around 90%. If you want to keep it at the recommended daily limit of...

Why you should skip the powered frunk and grab a Satonic soft close frunk

Those listings are presumably the same product from different vendors. Near the top of the page, you can see one is "Satonic Official Store" while the other is "Satonic Autoparts Store". The names don't necessarily mean anything as most vendors are little mom and pop shops that can use whatever...

I just ordered the Satonic for $63. You can get it here: https://www.aliexpress.us/item/3256805972551806.html then use the coupons STU5OFF and AEUS05 for $5 off each. The first is good to the end of Jan while the second expires on Jan 12. The listing shows the V1 pictures but I wouldn't be...

USA MY RWD has soft limited LR battery!

That seems like a good thing as that would make the range estimates more realistic. Perhaps they haven't updated it yet, but the RWD is still listed as 260 miles. That is actually the range I'm seeing so far - my average consumption has been around 270Wh/m which would be about 260 miles with 70kWh.
  48. B

USA MY RWD has soft limited LR battery!

Interestingly the 2024 MY LR and Performance have had their range ratings reduced from 330 to 310 and 303 to 285. That reduction is about what you expect if you switched from an 82kWh battery to a 77-78kWh battery. Wonder if the 2023 MY RWD is using the same batteries as the 2024 MYs.
  49. B

USA MY RWD has soft limited LR battery!

That may have been their intention, but the last batch of US MY RWDs seem to have all that. However, though the fog lights are installed and hooked up, they aren't controllable through the screen. I'm hoping to gain access to them with the s3xy buttons.
  50. B

USA MY RWD has soft limited LR battery!

That is likely true with the China made MYs you get in Canada, but the recent US made MY RWDs appear to be the same as the LR minus the motor, and possibly a slightly different battery.
