GM Is Bringing Back HUMMER, and It Has 1,000 Electric Horsepower!

1000 hp.is probably enough. I must be getting too old.

Free Destination Charging: 50x L2 80A Stations @ Caltech, Pasadena, CA

California will exceed 10% EVs in the not so distant future. We are currently at only 3.5%, but with over 7% of new car sales electric and rising each year, it will happen in this new decade.

Ohio state legislature enacts $200 surcharge to register an EV!

Since EVs cost roughly $10k more than their ICE equivalents, you are front loading a bunch of sales tax, then still paying a yearly property tax on the car. In our case that would be $800 more tax, or $160 a year assuming 5 years, plus the registration tax. Everybody needs roads whether or not...

Ohio state legislature enacts $200 surcharge to register an EV!

The joke is on Californians though. The extra money is being used mostly for turning freeways into toll roads. The streets are still crumbling.

Choosing between new M3P and new 75D

The first deliveries of the Y should be in March according to Elon Time. The Model S has a lot more room, but costs twice as much, and probably will depreciate much faster than a Model 3 or Y.

Choosing between new M3P and new 75D

Are you referring to the Model S 100D? The 75D has been discontinued. You sound like a candidate for the Model Y.
  7. C

Quite disappointment with my new Model 3's range. Should I be?

Yes. You never recover all losses due to elevation changes: When you use more power to climb a hill, the higher kW demand increases the resistance losses. As you descend, regen only recovers ~80%, and sometimes friction braking is needed. If you coast down a hill with no regen, the higher speed...

    Hydrogen vs. Battery

Never assume malice when ignorance is possible. Typical politicians think H2 is made with a lantern battery, two nails and tap water. Feinstein/Pelosi think you need a kite and a lightning storm instead of the battery.

Stealth Performance is now standard for the P model

When my M3P+ arrives, the first thing I do is buy a set of 18" wheels, tires, and TPMS's. Then I buy a set of real track rims (wider) and tires. Then upgrade the pads and fluid. Then add some camber. Then sell the 20's.

NEMA 14-50 is dead - all hail NEMA 6-50

14-50 supplies safe 120v power AND safe 240v power. It is what is used on most motorhomes so adapters are widely available.

NEMA 14-50 is dead - all hail NEMA 6-50

Most people should not be doing their own wiring. It requires a complete HS education.

Climate Change / Global Warming Discussion

By portraying green adoption at lower levels, they ensure their survival as a bureaucracy. Bureaus are living creatures. They grow, reproduce, and die. Well... they are renamed.

NEMA 14-50 is dead - all hail NEMA 6-50

That is a very irritating aspect of the US EV sellers. They do not acknowledge the existence of 3-ph power. To compound their error, most do not recognize 277 vac as a common single phase source in the US for commercial buildings. Most your parking lot and interior lighting is 277 vac...

    Stealth Performance Now Available!

Only slightly off-topic, the 2020 Corvette has a 40/60 weight bias. I wonder if they are going to allow an ALL OFF mode in their performance traction management system? The ZR1 had ALL OFF, but it was well balanced. Turning it off on a 2020 might make it handle like a Carrera GT "Widowmaker".

California Rebate: Does a $60k+ Model 3 qualify?

If you order a Model 3 Performance with FSD, you will notice it breaks the $60k ceiling for the now reduced $2000 EV rebate. Since you send in your sales contract to apply, they know what you paid. So perhaps it's safer to order FSD later if you are going that route.
  16. C

    Stealth Performance Now Available!

From my reading, it appears you need to update the updated brakes in order to survive a track day. And add camber. Seems they really need to start there. But is a car that you cannot turn off the babysitters ever really a track car?

    Hydrogen vs. Battery

It's of particular interest in 2020 that California, the largest single regional market for Green cars, has: Removed the Model S & X from eligibility, reduced the Model 3 rebate to $2000, and has Hydrogen Rebates at $4500. Who forget to send them the memo? Tesla. While Hydrogen Cars are not...
  18. C

Quite disappointment with my new Model 3's range. Should I be?

To maximize range: Do not use TACC/AP Do not use high regen. Keep speed to posted limit Pretend there is an egg between your foot and the pedals. BTW - This hasn't changed in 50 years. Do not use cruise control Brake early Don't speed Pretend there is a dinosaur egg between your bare foot...

    Curb Rash-- it's so humiliating

Remember when tires were so tall that you could not curb your rims, only scrub your whitewalls?
  20. C

    Stealth Performance Now Available!

This is what is really frustrating about the ordering system now. You can't order even simple things like wheels à la carte. I do not like the new trend of running ultra-low profile wheels on street cars and trucks. Yes trucks too are infected with 22's with rubber band tires.

    Curb Rash-- it's so humiliating

Auto parable: Long ago, my wife and I saved up for a truly bad-arse sportscar. We were so gentle with it; we were terrified of it. One day she drove it to a shopping center to get some office supplies. She was only gone 20 minutes, and somebody keyed it all down one side. It is...

Porsche Taycan Vs Tesla Model S: Review, Road Test, Race, Charging

Welcome to DCFC. Enjoy the ride. Would you like to speculate why one car charged at twice the rate of the other? That should add 20 pages of speculation to the thread. Correction: ABB 350's are 920vdc x 400a, not 1000vdc. Found old 2018 pics.

Porsche Taycan Vs Tesla Model S: Review, Road Test, Race, Charging

A Tesla Supercharger could only charge a Taycan at 480 vdc max. It really needs a 1000v charger to see the full speed. There are probably over 400 locations of 350kW @ 1000vdc chargers already and climbing.

Porsche Taycan Vs Tesla Model S: Review, Road Test, Race, Charging

I have not tested the Taycan yet, so I can only rely on their North American website. It says 270kW using a 350kW charger. 350kW chargers started to appear in late 2018. I tested a 350kW on 12-09-2018. I haven't been able to test them past 109 kW though.

Cadillac adds lane changing to Super Cruise

Yes, you need OnStar with cell reception because that's how it calls for help if Supercruise cannot get a response out of you. It needs a GPS signal too so it knows where to send help to. ie - if you have a medical emergency and the car cannot wake you, it has to send help. It's a liability...

Cadillac adds lane changing to Super Cruise

Those are the frontal cameras that are present on all 2016+ CT6's with or without Supercruise. It does not show the other cameras or sensors. Cadillac demonstrated autosteering to the press in 2012. They did not release a FSD video in Nov 2016 however.

Porsche Taycan Vs Tesla Model S: Review, Road Test, Race, Charging

Much like Tesla's can use an adapter for CHAdeMO, J1772 cars can use Destination chargers with a TeslaTap. But the point is the Taycan can travel coast to coast in many areas today, which was totally false in 2018. Tesla still has the best charging network and system, but CCS has come a...

Autopilot dangerously reducing speed on highways

This is what some EV ACC systems do: If somebody changes lanes into your frontal buffer zone, it will slowly reduce speed unless a collision is imminent. This applies to at least 4 EVs I can think of, and several ICE cars. I've not tested it in the Teslas yet. In fact, I have only used the...

Honda e, what does everyone think?

I'm not EV religious, I'm just an EV owner and enthusiast since 2012. We have some Volts, and they are nearly always in Pure EV mode. They do not burn a drop of gas in a normal month. It's only when you exceed 50 miles do they use any gas. It's like having two cars. A pure EV when...

Porsche Taycan Vs Tesla Model S: Review, Road Test, Race, Charging

Now compare Tesla DCFC, CCS, CHAdeMO today. Not that long ago, CHAdeMO was #1, Tesla #2, CCS non-existent. Something is not up to date on the DOE site. There are not just 5 CCS sites down, and 3 planned.
  37. C

Honda e, what does everyone think?

Yes. You said it did not have enough range. The pragmatic solution is a commuter range EV with a gasoline backup for long trips. Honda and many others have tried the practical solution and people didn't want them. They will buy short range EVs and long range EVs, but few people want a better...

Snow Tires cost 10% of efficiency

Note that cold roads/air increases rolling resistance of tires. Cold air also slightly harms aero resistance. Water on roads really reduces range. You see that water spray coming up from tires on the highway? That is lifting water and accelerating it. You can feel it when you cross a small...
  39. C

Honda e, what does everyone think?

They make great compromise. It's a Clarity PHEV. But for some reason, people don't buy PHEVs. The biggest seller of all time was the Chevrolet Volt/Opel Ampera? but even that did not sell enough to justify keeping them in production. The Prius PHEV will overtake it soon, but it's not a big...

SB 6586 - Do NOT let this happen!

No. California has been nerfing solar and EVs since 2016, and it's as radically leftist as you get. We have the highest costs per mile in the USA for all kinds of cars/trucks. Cars have several different taxes on them. By the time a car is 10 years old, you've spent more on taxes than the car.

Mainstream EV Adoption Ultimately Limited By...

Parking meters are electronic now. Put a 240v port in parking meters, and increase their number. That is if they REALLY want EV adoption. I'm not convinced California does anymore, and I'm not sure why. Our state is starting to nerf their EV programs.

Cadillac adds lane changing to Super Cruise

    Correct. It's a hardware change.
  43. C

Honda e, what does everyone think?

It an appliance. There are two basic groups of car owners: Those who dream of cars, and those who don't. This would be a class B. Not that it's bad, most buyers are class B.

Cadillac adds lane changing to Super Cruise

Caddy is doing OTA. IIRC nearly everybody is now. Caddy did their first OTA test in 2009 for the headlights. It worked, but they refused to play with the ECM due to EPA issues. If they accidentally did something that changed the MPG or emissions, they could be sued into collapse.

Cadillac adds lane changing to Super Cruise

Caddy has only released the CT6 as a Supercruise technology pathfinder. They have been dinking with it since 2012, and were supposed to roll it out in late 2015. Naw. And most Caddys were supposed to have it for 2020. Naw. They ran into a servicing issue. The cars need special equipment...

Cadillac adds lane changing to Super Cruise

IIRC you need to order FSD to get the auto lane change feature?
  47. C

I don’t understand the obsession with FSD.

It has been reported by insiders that GM's Supercruise system has been heavily derated due to legal issues and repair issues. Which means a Cruise AV could probably go LA to NY without a steering wheel since GM owns the lidar geomapping dataset of the USA. Trivia - Cadillac ran into a problem...

Porsche Taycan Vs Tesla Model S: Review, Road Test, Race, Charging

IIRC, that's not an option today, correct? I thought the 2020 Model S I drove was loaded since it had a white interior. I do not remember it having A/C seats. Not fan air, cold air. Sends chills up your spine. And the Audi EV has massage like most luxury cars have today. A/C seats are the...

Porsche Taycan Vs Tesla Model S: Review, Road Test, Race, Charging

My 2018 Model S 'blindspot detection' was not very accurate especially around motorcycles, and I had to look forward to see it which compounded the problem. The seat was not nearly as nice as those other brands I mentioned. Can you even get A/C seats in a Tesla? You really need to try on a...
