Does a battery ever have a positive ROI with net metering

I have dollar for dollar net metering but not kWh for kWh. I have to buy at a rate roughly double what I can sell for (about 14¢ vs 6.5¢) because my utility pays me only the generation fee, not the transmission fees when I export. What this means is that there is some economic benefit for my...

    04.08.2024 - Solar output... Ooops, I forgot :)

I live in totality zone. Production dropped to 0.0kW, no fooling.

Nice touch labeling eclipse time in the daily logs and showing the forecast icon as the sun in totality!

    Netzero App

I have the Netzero app, and I'm a bit confused how to use the diagnostics. I understand I need to login to my gateway. The app asks me for my gateway password and the IP address. I give it both but it says it cannot connect. I know this works because I also use the Powerwall Dashboard and it...

    Netzero App

My automation screen says I've not given myself the ability to change powerwall settings, only read data. How do I change this so I can use automations?

    Tesla App visuals

When you do this, do you not lose the ability to manage the wall connector separately? There's are some menus on that separate connector page I used to have that would let me change HPWC settings like Wifi or power sharing.

Tesla App not recognizing vehicle charging data

This happens to me too sometimes, I think it's just a bug. Often it will be correct, only to change later.

    Powerwall Reset During Grid Outage

You say you have 5.3kW of solar roof and 5.2kW of other PV, are these connected as strings to inverters? Do you have microinverters? I ask because it's the inverter's responsibility to move the string-connected PV to a low power point on their I-V curve when the battery starts getting full...

Questions on Tesla Solar Inverter vs. Enphase Microinverters

The cost of solar panels have fallen so much that microinverters now represent a significant part of the solar install. If you have little shading (true for me), then an inverter with 4 MPPT string trackers is often a way easier install and fewer materials. Microinverters are also another item...

Charge on solar with multiple vehicles

Hi, Last Saturday I took delivery of a model Y, so I now have two Tesla EVs along with solar and a Powerwall Plus. One nice thing about this is, since my utility sells me one kWhr for 14¢ yet only buys my excess for 6.5¢ or so, I can now dump extra electricity into my cars once my Powerwall...

    Supporting a second PW2

Why not just place it on some bricks, and then attach it to the wood to prevent tipping? This is what my installer did in my basement, because they did not want to risk mounting it to a wall and have problems later if they come to find there was a framing problem. It's less risky.

Charge on Solar "The site needs to have solar without any export limitations."

You could always just set your car to charge manually when your Powerwall gets near full. If you set a charge rate that is right for your inverter size and battery, your PW will fill in when solar power reduces due to clouds. This just requires a but more manual management.

Question on Gateway / Powerwall behavior when off grid.

I had a Powerwall+ with 8.6kW solar installed late last year, and now I'm finally getting good sunny weather to see how it performs. I have confirmed the 7.6kW on grid limit, as well as the 9.6kW off grid limit. Today I was doing a test when the battery was at a 95% state of charge and full...

How Do I Responsibly Report a Powerwall 2 Hardware Safety Defect?

If the board is indeed just two layers, then there would be no prepreg, just FR4, Cu, and soldermask layers, and as you say as much as 1.6mm between the traces. But then I don't understand why OP says 0.38mm if the issue is between traces on the top and bottom. Maybe a through via? I guess...

How Do I Responsibly Report a Powerwall 2 Hardware Safety Defect?

Yes, thinking about this more I'm less certain it's a problem. OP wrote: How does OP know that the 0.38mm is primarily FR4 and not prepreg? How many mils of prepreg would be required for adequate spacing for observation #1? I think I don't entirely understand the geometry in question for...

How Do I Responsibly Report a Powerwall 2 Hardware Safety Defect?

1.6mm is a typical PCB thickness, but PCBs often have more than 2 layers. Distance between internal layers are less. I'm less familiar with UL 1741, but other standards I am more familiar with are OK with fairly high voltages between layers on PCB layers because there is solid insulating...

First Power Outage with PW2, have a few questions

I got my solar / PW+ system installed and turned on in late November. My solar is about 8.6kW peak, two strings wired into two of the MPPT inputs in the PW+ inverter. Today was the first day I had a grid outage. It happened during a storm watch event, so my battery was charged to 100%...

How Do I Responsibly Report a Powerwall 2 Hardware Safety Defect?

I meant to respond to this but forgot, sorry. I unfortunately do not have access to UL 1741, so I cannot really respond to your questions. I work on products that typically fall under other standards like UL 61010.

How Do I Responsibly Report a Powerwall 2 Hardware Safety Defect?

Tesla could fix observation #2 with some Kapton tape or other suitable insulator. Fixing observation #1 would be harder, likely a replacement inverter board.

How Do I Responsibly Report a Powerwall 2 Hardware Safety Defect?

Also, to reiterate what you said above, if these are indeed defects (I haven't measured them and cannot confirm), then what it means for a powerwall owner is that there is a somewhat elevated risk of ground fault. Anyone who had a Powerwall installed by a competent company (with competent...

How Do I Responsibly Report a Powerwall 2 Hardware Safety Defect?

I am also an electrical engineer and deal with NRTL safety compliance in product design. Observation 1 may or may not be a problem, it depends on the insulation rating of the PCB material used as well as the conformal coating type. How do you know the PCB material is ordinary FR4? There are...

(Please) rate my setup - how does this look?

If you are using Silfab, why not get their 410W or newer 420W panels? That would upgrade your peak power significantly.

    Powerwall Firmware 23.44.0 eb113390

It seems like this would conflate the AC/DC round trip efficiency together with battery capacity. If the battery had say 20% degradation, but I also have 20% conversion loss, I don't see how I could distinguish this from 40% capacity loss and no conversion loss.

    Powerwall % Degradation

Where in the app did you go to determine it says 1% degradation?

    Netzero App

It would be nice if pinch-to-zoom worked in this app. This doesn't work in the Tesla app either, sometimes you want to see finer detail than the whole day.

    Powerwall Firmware 23.44.0 eb113390

This is a concern I have. If they remove the ability to measure capacity, short of installing my own metering, how would I prove to them that I have lost enough capacity that I qualify for a warranty replacement?

    Powerwall Firmware 23.44.0 eb113390

Does anyone know why is Tesla removing this? I like having this data and like to be able to see it. I do not want to be reliant on the cloud.

    Tesla App visuals

I have the opposite problem. I have the single view but still want the separate HPWC screen. I have a Model 3, a Powerwall Plus, and a HPWC. When I first got the Powerwall Plus setup, I still had three pages: the car page, the powerwall page, and the HPWC page. Now that I enabled Charge on...
