IF Metall: Members who do not strike must be excluded
November 15, 2023 - 08:28
Members of IF Metall who, despite the strike, continue to work at Tesla's workshops will be excluded.
- Strike-breaking is incompatible with the statutes, says Tomas With, vice chairman of IF Metall.
According to IF Metall, there are members of the union who still work at Tesla's workshops, even though the union has gone on strike. In a post on Facebook, IF Metall's chief legal officer Darko Davidovic writes that:
"those members who do not respect their organization" will be "excluded from IF Metall".
Darko Davidovic tells Dagens Arbete that no decision has yet been made. But members who do not participate in the strike violate the union's bylaws.
- Then we have to act. We don't want that, but it's not sustainable, he says.
He himself has received information about members breaking the strike, but he has no idea how many there may be.
- We think it is troublesome that Tesla is bringing in strike breakers, which no one has done since the beginning of the 20th century. Then it won't be better if we also have members who work. Now I have understood that there are not that many, but
the whole point of a conflict is that the work must stand still until an agreement has been signed, he says.
Any decisions on exclusion are made by IF Metall's union board, where Tomas With, vice chairman of the union, is one of the decision makers. He confirms that the association has now begun to map which members it may be about.
- We try to talk to each of them. We need to get a more accurate picture before we can make any decision. That work has begun this week. We'll see how long it takes, he says.
Tomas With does not want to speculate on how many of the union's members have not yet joined the strike.
- We need to get in touch with everyone it may be about so we have a basis that we can relate to, he says.
In the talks, the union representatives will inform about the statutes and all other issues related to the conflict. Primarily, the purpose of the talks is to get the members to join the strike.
-
The primary aim is of course to get these people to see the situation and want to participate in the fight to get a collective agreement, he says.
If a member continues to go to work despite this, he will be expelled from the union.
- Yes, strike-breaking is incompatible with the statutes. It's not possible. Once we have information on what it looks like for each person, we can take a position on it then. But it is clear that you have both rights and obligations as a member. That's how it is, he says.
What is the duty of a union member in this situation?
-
If the federal board has decided on a conflict, you have an obligation to participate in it. If you don't stand up for it, there is the ultimate possibility of exclusion, says Tomas With.
