I'm glad they made it an even playing field (no matching referral and no VA/OH double referral) the prizes aren't as good this time around for sure, but its free to participate. There should be less people offering $$$ this time around as there is quite frankly a much larger gamble to do it due to the changes.

To each their own I guess, I didn't really participate in the last round (even though I'm from VA, and could've given people the $2k referral code). I didn't care for the powerwall, gigafactory tour or the option to buy a loaded Model X.

I still don't care for the Gigafactory tour or the Powerwall. And I understand I have no chance in hell in getting the free P90DL. But a VIP invite to the Model 3 unveiling might be cool.

I didn't really participate until I realized about three weeks before the last program's end, that I had six referrals. (That was a huge surprise.) After that I did focus a bit more, because yes, I did want a Founder's X. But my code was not and is not in my signature here (a couple people pm'd for it).

Most were people in the area that I've met at different events, shared my experiences, talked through their fears ... until they could see how a Tesla would fit into their life. In fact, just yesterday, before this program was extended, I had screen shots for someone I know showing where they could charge on their trips, how long it would take, etc. He's decided to take a test drive this weekend. If he buys, I obviously didn't do it for the referral (because yesterday, there was no extended program). But you know I'll get credited with that sale.

I could say this is boring, too. But the point of the program is to reward owners who are evangelizing for the company anyway. Without an incentive program. That's how I got most of my referrals.

So don't participate. The program is meant to reward owners who would do their best to get people in a Model S anyway. And I am hoping to match or exceed referrals from the last round (13) - not because I want a Gigafactory invite (have that) or free Powerwall (have that), but because I want Tesla to recognize that owners are selling vehicles for them, with or without reward.

I agree entirely ... well said ... I found out about 3 weeks before that I had 4 and ended up with 14 .... had fun answering questions and helping people make the decision ... and Tesla sold a lot of cars .... yesterday's press conference sent the stock back up ....

I don't find any of that boring. I love talking about my car, charging, etc. and I do often, regardless of the incentive.

I created a new thread to hopefully get as many TMC members to the Model 3 event as possible. I added a few of you (Bonnie, cmu5p, Max*, and of course myself). If you want to be added to this list and accounted for, send me a PM with your link and how many referrals you have (if any). Periodically update me with the number of referrals you have, so that when you get to 10...you can hopefully stop taking referrals. Then we can spread the wealth to other TMC members that still need referrals to get to 10 for the Model 3 event invite.

I was told this wasn't okay, and this should only be posted in this single referral link thread. I'm posting my original chart below. If you want to be added to this chart, please PM me. Keep me informed on your status (number of referrals) and I will occasionally update this thread with a new chart. The goal is to stop anyone from going over 10 referrals since there is zero benefit, and to pass the referral along to another TMC member that hasn't hit 10 yet. If you are participating in this, the goal is to inform and help future Model S owners as much as possible, not to just share your link and sit back though. Please do your part.

I will be passing on my personal referrals as well as online referrals to anyone on the list below once I hit 10! Let's chat in this thread or feel free to PM me if you want to discuss your future Model S!

Great idea @TheAccuser, to set up a list to limit referrals to 10. Last time the referral program didn't work out for me very well, hopefully this time I can get a few referrals, and hopefully hit the magic number. Even 1 would be nice.

A few months ago, we kicked off an experimental Referral Program. The results are in and the Referral Program has been incredibly successful. We’d like to say thank you. Thank you for sharing your experiences, thank you for letting your friends drive your cars, thank you for spreading the word. Your enthusiasm and graciousness are what make the Tesla family so special.

We’re now pleased to announce that we’re launching a new Referral Program that will extend to the end of 2015. We have adjusted the terms of the program in response to the feedback we received. In the new Referral Program, you can continue to offer your friends $1,000 towards the purchase of a new Model S through the holiday season. While we will no longer be giving Tesla credits to you as the referrer, we have expanded the unique experiences we’re making available to our top supporters:
The person to reach the overall highest number of referrals per region will receive a free Ludicrous P90D Model S, plus an all-expenses paid trip to Model 3 unveiling event with VIP access
The first to ten referrals per region will receive a free Powerwall with installation
Those making ten or more referrals will receive a VIP invitation to Model 3 unveiling event
Those making five or more referrals will receive a VIP invitation to Gigafactory opening event

I find it a bit disingenuous to say that they eliminated the $1,000 credit to the referrer due to feedback they received. I had someone offer to use my link as a result of my help, but I'm not pushing it on anyone to make some magic number. The $1,000 is more valuable to me than the incentives for the Model 3 / Gigafactory parties.

The feedback may have been from the VA/OH residents and people who weren't able to get enough referrers due to only being able to give out the $1k. It's somewhat unfair that some people got $2k, while others only got $1k and got to keep the other $1k.


If I had been given $1k for every referral I would make, I would participate harder last round. Since I'm from VA, and got $0, there were enough VA residents here eager to go to the gigafactory tour, so I just sat back.

2 people with -1, and 1 person with -4 now. My guess is that they are trying to cheat the system and they had referrals from the 1st phase of the referral program that weren't confirmed yet and asked their referrals to cancel their orders and re-order so they could quickly get to 10? If that's what is happening, good for Tesla for having that potential hole patched from the start.

I know this is selfish of me, but I wish they would have opened it up to non owners, not that I know enough people to have won anything, a powerwall wouldn't have gone a miss though.

Still would have been nice to get money off for someone buying a Tesla.

Glad the referral program has been a success anyway, the more Teslas on the road the better.:smile:

I suspect this mistake will be corrected shortly.

After a nice letter to TM and a snarky comment on TMC I now have a referral code, too! as a Model X confirmed reservation holder only. Not really taking credit here (thanks Bonnie), just making the announcement so other SigX-only folks know to check their page.

So I hope they keep track of the levels we reached under Version 1 of the program. My counter is now back to zero referrals. I still have one referral "pending" so I haven't received a letter from Tesla yet, so I hope they don't weasel out of the powerwall they stated for 5+ referrals during round one.

From the Tesla website:

"Please note that we may withhold credits, discounts or other awards where we believe customers are acting in bad faith or otherwise acting contrary to the intent of this program. To be clear, commercializing or otherwise selling referral codes is not appropriate, and we will not honor such codes. We cannot cover every nefarious scenario, nor will we attempt to, but we do promise to be fair and reasonable."

This seems to be new language for this round. Does anyone know if buying Google Adwords for "Tesla Referral Code" etc is OK or not? I noticed a lot of the previous leaders were doing so last round. Personally, I didn't think that was really any benefit to Tesla... all that's doing is picking off people who were about to buy anyway, it's not like that creates new demand. But hey, if you had the $ to spend on buying ads and took the risk then more power to you I guess. I just wish they would spell out a little more clearly what's OK and what's not. Of course, this time, it's a lot more risky to spend $ on ads since the $1000 credit is gone and there's really only 1 large prize with cash value.
