Tesla Model 3 potential export to NZ from UK

Hello everyone,

I'm considering planning to export my UK Tesla Model 3 Performance to New Zealand and am seeking advice from anyone who has experience or knowledge in this area. My primary concern was around the cellular data connection functionality after the move.

Tesla UK informed me that the cellular data connection in my car would not work in New Zealand. However, Tesla NZ mentioned that they could swap the SIM card and load maps, but they haven't directly addressed the compatibility issues of the cellular hardware with the NZ region, as pointed out by Tesla UK.

Additionally, I am aware that my remaining one-year warranty will not be valid in New Zealand. Beyond these concerns, I am also open to hearing about any other potential challenges or considerations that I might not have thought of. Specifically, I'm interested in:

1. Has anyone successfully transitioned a Tesla from the UK (or a similar region) to NZ, and how did you manage the cellular connectivity issue?
2. Are there any technical modifications or regulatory compliances I should be aware of?
3. Any insights on the impact of such a move on the car’s software updates or serviceability in NZ?
4. Other logistical or technical challenges that might arise during or after the import process.

And here's my current pros/cons list:

Pros:
- Save a couple thousand GBP (maybe)?

Cons:
- Insurnace in NZ? Dificulty insuring?
- No warranty on battery (8 years)
- Lose 1 year left on warrent
- Have to change MCU cellular hardware maybe?
- Resale value of import lower?
- Cant’ change to bigger car
- No car for first couple months
- Maybe something wrong with battery - 12v dead upon import
- Stress of the shipping process

The car has an onboard map which is European. I imagine yiud still get the google map tiles in the display but forget using navigation unless you can get that updated.

Essentially you need Tesla to recode the car for your region and I imagine they’d prefer to sell you a new one.
 
It looks like you’ve already got a good idea of what it takes and why bother with all the grief and unnecessary expense? I can’t see it being cheaper to ship the car and officially import it into NZ.

I get the emotional attachment but the obvious answer is to sell your U.K. car and buy another over there.

It’s not like the Model 3 is rare, you’ll be able to source an identical car to the one you already have within hours.

There is also the obvious risk of you spending thousands importing and registering the car (in addition to shipping costs there will also be import tax to pay), you get it there and Tesla shrug their shoulders and say they can’t update the car to work in NZ. You are then up the creek without a paddle.

If most cars in NZ are imported and Tesla are happy to change up the maps and cellular connection then I see no reason why you wouldn't ship your car over. Better to have a car you know well than a used one you don't, especially as having your car waiting for you when you move will make life much easier when you get there.

Edit: One thing I've not seen mentioned, do they use the same CCS plug down there?
 
Sorry to add to the pile-on to the OP, but this plan is crackers.

You go through this sort of heartache and pain for a one of a kind car that’s no longer made, special, or not easily obtainable. And even then it’s hassle central.

All this for a model 3?! Nah
 
Only one I can help with is the dead 12v battery. My car hasn’t been touched or driven for 3 months. Left it at 80% ands it’s now at 65. I left sentry mode on for a whole week and I’ve also done a few long range sniper fart attacks on my house mate because I’m a huge man child.

I don’t think that battery will be an issue - depending on Charge level regulations before you ship it.

I reckon that will wane if there are a whole series of snags once the car gets to NZ

What about, eventually, 2nd hand sale in NZ? I reckon the budget would need to factor in shipping it back to Blighty again at that point.

Heck, I'm reluctant to buy LHD Plaid because of eventual 2nd sale, and presumably I could drive it over to Calais and put a "à vendre" sign in the windscreen

Please do buy one, I’d quite like a keenly priced lightly used one ;)

Good point on the used sale price, if there are any outstanding snags, it will be worthless in that market.

This isn’t a 1960’s mustang, it’s a modern connected car configured for a specific market and if you can’t get it fully working, it’s a paper weight.
