Solar Roof Broward County FL

Hi. I haven't been able to get a straight answer as to if solar roof installations have started in Broward (Ft Lauderdale) FL. The Tesla energy specialist I spoke to said install should take 6-11 weeks but the tiles are only rated to 130 mph winds. I believe Broward code requires roofing to be rated at 155 mph. The specialist said that they have not been tested beyond 130. Does anyone know if installations are ongoing in Broward? Has Tesla applied for installs with the county?

I assume you are talking about a Tesla Solarglass V3 roof. If not ignore this.

No ideas about the availability in your area. But our Solarglass roof is being installed now. They are quite a bit stronger than the regular tile roof. One of our installers demonstrated this by jumping up and down on the roof. He is probably over 200 pounds. The roof is held on by nails at the top plate and a series of metal clips that clip into the previous tiles nailed in top plate. Overall the overall profile is pretty low so not a huge amount to catch wind.

Thanks for the reply. My county has a very strong hurricane/wind speed code. Tela has not yet gotten approval to install. With the current Covid crisis and many government offices working limited hours it will probably be some time until they are approved. I certainly wanted to get this done by at least 2021 to get the tax credit. I don't know if I will be able to wait until Tesla V3 is approved.

Tesla's website says up to 166 mph winds. Is that only for V3?

Very interesting. I’ll try calling Tesla today and see if they have any more information. I last spoke to them about a month ago. They did not have approval in my county at that time.

That is a change. When I last looked the wind rating was 130. So maybe they increased it. My county required 141 I think.

I'm down in the Broward area as well and very interested to know if you were able to proceed with any form of installation?

I have not heard from them in awhile. I don't believe they have approval in Broward due to wind speed rating.

I haven’t been able to get a response from the person assigned to my job. I doubt Tesla has county approval but I certainly don’t know for sure.

Hi, just was told by Tesla that my roof order was placed on hold because Broward county requires a wind rating of 170 mph. I am in Pembroke Pines. 8/13/2021

Same issue in Palm Beach County. That’s one of the reasons I went with solar panels instead of a Solar Roof on our new home.

As per my Tesla advisor, they have all needed approvals from Palm Beach county and moving forward with multiple installations. There is also news about tesla building 218-home luxury development in Palm Beach Florida with solar roofs, batteries, and electric-vehicle chargers. I think that leaves only Broward and Miami-Dade counties to approve.

Broward County resident here. My rep said that they are approved in Broward county and work on my roof will likely commence in March.
