Renault-Nissan Alliance to open second research office in Silicon Valley
Renault-Nissan Alliance to open second research office in Silicon Valley

The Renault-Nissan Alliance will be developing user-interface and smart-grid technology for future electric cars for both brands at the new facility located in Silicon Valley in California.

The Renault-Nissan Alliance will open a second technology research facility in Silicon Valley at the end of the month, focusing on electric car, and smart grid, development.

The Renault-Nissan Alliance is locating the office in the area officially known as Mountain View, California, next to big software companies like Google, and will also be working on in-car wireless Internet connectivity and making graphic interface systems more user-friendly.

The Nissan LEAF's 'Carwings' telematics system, which displays a map of nearby recharging stations and energy consumption read-outs on a 7-inch touchscreen, is a good example of the kind of technology that will be explored at this new facility.

"Having a greater footprint in one of the world's headquarters for clean tech research will extend our lead further [into] the auto industry's shift to sustainable transportation, said Renault-Nissan Alliance CEO Carlos Ghosn.

As well as furthering the development of the Nissan LEAF, other future electric cars such as a premium Infiniti electric sedan, Renault cars destined for Europe like the Twizy and Kangoo ZE (for zero-emissions) electric cars, and commercial electric fleet vehicles from both brands also stand to benefit from research at the new Silicon Valley facility.

Some choice quotes:

...Nissan plans to roll out three more models by 2014, while Renault will offer four by the end of next year...

...In terms of design, we’re going to see revolutionary electric cars coming. Design will be completely different with the next generation of electric cars....

...deploying quick-chargers everywhere. People aren’t anxious because the range isn’t so big. They’re anxious because they don’t know where to charge...

Unfortunately LEAF sales were down for January, at least US sales, don't know about world wide numbers. http://green.autoblog.com/2012/02/01/chevy-volt-sales-drop-to-603-nissan-moves-676-leafs-in-january/
You mean compared to Dec-11, not Jan-11 (Y-o-Y) or Nov-11.

There is a greate deal of incentive to buy EVs in December - you can get the 7.5k back in one month instead of one year. In anycase, Nissan is not yet matching supply to demand - so we have to wait till we see that matched to figure out the true demand. We may not get there before Smyrna plant comes online.

The question is why is Nissan not matching supply to demand if they were able to produce over 900 units for December why did they only produce around 600 units for January? Unless they did produce more units over all and just sent more of them elsewhere.

I think a commmenter mentioned Norway and Japan got more allocation for January. Nissan may be shifting stock to countries where they can make more profit (esp. given the unfavorable exchange rate). I think only after the Smyrna plant is open will they go full bore in terms of US sales.

Nissan had mentioned that a body restyle for LEAF may be coming to Europe.

Geneva 2012 shows off the Nissan Invitation concept said to be the basis for something to be made in the Sunderland, UK factory.
I wonder if this gives hints where LEAF styling may be headed, or at least indications of a model they might produce alongside the LEAF.
