PW Did Not Recharge on Solar [on the weekend]

This site may earn commission on affiliate links.
My PWs provided power to my loads during a ‘peak’ period on a Friday going from 100% down to about 81% as expected. Normally the PWs would charge from solar back up to 100% within a couple of hours the following AM, but last weekend on both Saturday and Sunday, nothing happened despite both being decent solar days. Strangely (and fortunately), normal operation was restored on Monday AM, and the PWs charged to 100% by late AM. I have attached some screen shots below that illustrate the problem. Has anyone else seen this strange behavior?

Good thought. Hadn’t noticed before, so I went back and double checked. As you can see, for the last 4 Saturday’s, the PWs charged normally from the previous days level back up to 100% as soon as the sun comes up. In fact, flicking back through a month of Saturday’s I couldn’t find a single example of this problem with my system.

I dont use time of use mode, but have read multiple feedback on "the algorithms" deciding whether to charge, how much, etc.
I'm on TOU and I changed a setting that I did not like. That is, on Friday's it would not charge the PW so as to make room for the longer Off Peak period on Saturday to charge. So I think the behavior described by the OP is not right

interesting. Note that while i did not think this may have played a role, we adjusted our TOU rate structure (reduced peak period by 1 hour and added 'super-off peak hours) 4 days before this phenomenon was observed. It charged normally in the AM for those 4 days preceeding this observation, but maybe it might just a quirk of this adjustment? Do you have any links to these 'algorithm' discussions?

Because you can not directly change the algorithms that tesla uses, this entire sticky thread on "buy / sell behavior" is basically people trying to get the TOU setup and buy / sell behavior to do what they want.

Since you just made a change to your TOU pricing, there is a VERY good chance that it is related to the new behavior you experienced.

For historical context, the Tesla algorithm used to only charge the Powerwalls if it saw a need to discharge later in the same day. Creating a fake peak period was the workaround to this behavior. It has been a long time since I was on a rate plan with off-peak weekends, so it's quite likely the algorithm has changed since then, though.

Like how? Add a very short false 'peak' period later in the day?

Thanks to the collective on this forum. Added a short 'peak' period to the weekend of the customized rate plan, and this restored the PW's desire to recharge on the weekend. See the attached pictures. The first one shows that the PW again missed charging on Saturday, the second and third pictures shows the rate plan before and after adding a short 5 - 5:30 PM fake peak period, and the forth shows the new behavior charging on Sunday.
