Dear Tesla Supporter,
As you are likely aware, Tesla remains banned in Michigan—not only for sales, but service as well. This inability to operate stemmed from an action by anti-Tesla interests where, on October 1, 2014, in the waning days of the legislature, language was inserted to House Bill 5606 effectively prohibiting any vehicle manufacturer from selling or servicing its own products directly to consumers. Originally intended to address issues between a manufacturer and its affiliated dealers, the amended version now effectively prohibits Tesla from investing in sales and service centers in Michigan, even though Tesla has no affiliated dealers. Unfortunately, this legislation passed and was subsequently signed into law by Governor Rick Snyder.
Despite signing the bill, Governor Snyder called for a review of Michigan law in writing so as not to stifle American innovation or progress. Representative Aaron Miller has introduced legislation (HB 5312) that will open the state of Michigan to Tesla. Once allowed, these brick and mortar retail locations will allow Tesla to improve service to our current customers and attract interest from new consumers keen to adopt electric vehicle technology without having to cross state lines (or even international borders!).
We need your help to encourage the House Commerce Committee to fairly review the issue of direct sales, so that Michigan consumers are afforded the freedom to choose how they purchase and service their vehicles. If you do reach out to your legislator, please let your voice be heard in a respectful and polite manner.
