Hyundai Nexo hydrogen fuel-cell prototype drives itself 118 miles without human input
The 190-kilometer (118-mile) route covered the distance from Seoul to Pyeongchang,
where the Winter Olympics will be held this month. Hyundai is the vehicle sponsor for the event.

The self-driving Nexos changed lanes and overtook slower-moving vehicles,
the company said, and traveled through automated toll gates and long underground tunnels.

Underground tunnels posed a different challenge, interrupting the GPS positioning signals
and requiring the autonomous vehicles to calculate their positions using external sensors,
also required when passing through the narrow openings of high-speed automated toll readers.

The reason for using a hydrogen fuel-cell vehicle, Hyundai explained, was because
the electric power required to process very high volumes of sensor data in real time
can produce a substantial reduction in the range of a battery-electric vehicle.
