Interesting. More & more auto execs seem to be willing to talk about Peak Oil. Ghosn & Lutz have stated post peak oil as the reason for the Leaf & Volt push.
I'm not surprised to see Daimler and BYD pair up for the Chinese market, as BYD is such a large battery producer for the region.
What may be interesting however, is if this joint venture eventually allows BYD to tap a Daimler platform for product to be sold elsewhere in the world. BYD's primary obstacle in exporting to Western markets is the fact that all of their cars are copycat ripoffs that would not pass IP protection regulations outside of China. The BYD E6 is the only model remotely ready for export (and BYD has mentioned U.S. ambitions for E6), although even then the headlights are "inspired" by the Japanese-market Honda Odyssey and I don't see the car being particularly competitive unless the price is outrageously cheap.
BYD is a battery powerhouse - it now needs a partner for auto platforms.
