Agreed on the cheezy glass display. Screams low budget.

I have talked with a key person in the marketing dept. I really like what the want to do which is a "rebel" or "pirate" attitude little guy against the big corporations. They only sell electric cars and would have no problem pointing out the hypocrisy of big companies selling EVs and gas at the same time.

They have some really edgy ideas that will get some eye opening attention. I think the Coda CEO is afraid to pull the trigger so we may see some 1/2 aas version.

Even at volumes as low as 600-700 vehicles per month, Mosher said Coda will have a sustainable business (the company has previously said it plans to produce just under 2,700 vehicles in 2010, ramping up to a max of 20,000 in 2011). Coda plans to use online social networks to help attract buyers. Coda will be “reaching out to people, bringing them in to dealerships,” via tools like Twitter, said Mosher.
You should be able to order one next month...

One issue not much discussed regarding Coda is the stability of Hafei.

In late 2009, Chang'an Motors took over Hafei and it looks like they plan to phase them out, under heavy pressure from the Chinese government to consolidate the Chinese auto industry. At this year's Beijing Auto Show a few weeks ago, Hafei had nothing new to show. Very strange when you consider almost everyone in the Chinese industry at least had something new. To me, this points to a short future for Hafei (which is really only a regional player in China anyway) and I wonder how this will play out for Coda.

I agree with this!
Electric-car makers should "under-promise and over-deliver," Mr. Czinger says, especially when it comes to the range of their vehicles. Coda's car is designed to go 100 miles between charges, he says, and Coda is basing that claim on the most aggressive of the federal government's standard road tests. He warns that electric-car makers risk disappointing customers if they base a range claim on a government test that is less representative of real-world driving.

Battery System and Electric Car Manufacturer CODA Closes Oversubscribed Series C Investment Round

SANTA MONICA, Calif., May 19 /PRNewswire/ -- CODA, a California-based designer and manufacturer of battery systems and electric cars, announced today the close of a $58 million Series C investment round, increasing total invested capital to more than $125 million. The round, initially capped at $50 million, was increased to accommodate strong investor demand. Aeris CAPITAL, a private Swiss investment office, led the round, with participation from new investors EDB Investments (EDBI), a leading investment firm headquartered in Singapore; Countyline LLC, an investment entity owned by Tony Pritzker and J.B. Pritzker; and Les Wexner, Chairman and CEO of Limited Brands. Existing investors Thomas F. Steyer, Mac Heller, Miles Rubin, John Bryson and Angeleno Group also participated.

Funding will be used to support the market entry of CODA's all-electric sedan and to commercialize production of CODA's transportation and utility application lithium-ion battery systems within Lio Energy Systems, CODA's battery system manufacturing joint venture with Lishen Power Battery. The joint venture has entered into cooperation agreements with Bank of Tianjin Joint-Stock Co. for up to $327 million of long-term credit, in addition to receiving a $100 million equity capital commitment from CODA and Lishen, for an aggregate capital commitment of up to $427 million to the joint venture.

CODA also announced that it will establish an office in Singapore to serve as the design and engineering center for the development and homologation of CODA electric vehicles for right-hand drive markets in Europe and Asia. CODA's Singapore office will participate in the company's research and development efforts into vehicle-to-grid technology, a system in which electric vehicles communicate with the power grid to provide electricity during peak demand periods.

"The continued interest in CODA among the investment community is a testament to the strength of our business model and go-to-market strategy," said Kevin Czinger, President and CEO, CODA. "We welcome EDBI to our team and look forward to working closely together to bring all-electric cars to Singapore and other international markets. While CODA remains focused on the U.S. introduction of our all-electric car this year, international markets, particularly in Asia and Europe, are important to the long term strategic positioning of our company."

"Energy storage and E-mobility are key cleantech sectors that EDBI has a strong interest to grow in Singapore. With increasing adoption of innovative technologies to meet clean energy and environmental protection mandates in many countries' urbanization drives, there is high growth potential for these sectors in Asia. CODA is well-positioned to be the leading company in these fields. With our strong networks and expertise, EDBI looks forward to partnering CODA with its new design and engineering center in Singapore to realize the full potential of this industry," said Chu Swee-Yeok, CEO EDBI.

CODA to Site Electric Car Battery Manufacturing Facility in Ohio Pending DOE Loan

SANTA MONICA, Calif., May 25 /PRNewswire/ -- CODA, a California-based electric car and battery company, announced today its plans to build an automotive-grade lithium ion battery system manufacturing facility in Ohio. CODA is considering several sites within Ohio for the facility, which could employ more than 1,000 skilled manufacturing workers initially. Construction of the facility is contingent upon finalizing an incentive package with the state of Ohio and the approval of an application for a Department of Energy (DOE) Advanced Technology Vehicles Manufacturing Loan (ATVM) to be submitted soon.

"CODA's decision to open a facility in our state means that Ohio workers will help manufacture the cars of the 21st century," said Senator Sherrod Brown of Ohio. "Ohio is quickly becoming a national leader in clean energy component manufacturing for the auto industry. In Ohio, CODA will find a rich manufacturing heritage, skilled workforce and entrepreneurial spirit."

Lio Energy Systems, a joint venture between CODA and Lishen Power Battery, would operate the facility. Lio Energy Systems currently operates a one-million square foot facility in Tianjin, China with the production capacity to produce more than 20,000 battery packs per year. The proposed facility in Ohio would replicate this facility. CODA will be the majority and control shareholder of the U.S. venture. Over the weekend, U.S. Secretary of Commerce Gary Locke toured the facility during the Obama administration's first cabinet-level trade mission in China. "International green technology partnerships can produce rapid job growth back home and deliver energy solutions abroad, and CODA's venture proves it," Locke said.

"With the help of our global family of partners, CODA's innovative team in Santa Monica has not only produced a battery system capable of powering affordable electric vehicles today, but has created the next great American manufacturing opportunity," said Kevin Czinger, President and CEO, CODA. "CODA was thoroughly impressed with the organization, execution, commitment, sincerity and integrity of the team put together by the state of Ohio representing both the public and private sectors."

"The competition for this project between states was intense, and Ohio was not even under consideration by CODA at first. But when we learned about CODA's innovative product, we made the case for them to invest in Ohio because of our skilled workers, world-class manufacturing infrastructure and competitive business environment," said Governor Ted Strickland of Ohio. "I want to thank CODA, Senator Brown and all of our partners whose work was integral to making this project a reality. I believe that Ohio can lead the automotive industry into the 21st century, and together, we are committed to rebuilding our economy and creating good jobs for hard-working Ohioans."

"Together with our public and private partners in Columbus, we worked to recruit CODA to the City of Columbus," said Mayor Michael B. Coleman. "CODA represents not only high quality employment opportunities and investment, but movement towards advancing our goals for a 21st century economy and a greener world. It also represents an opportunity for Columbus to be the epicenter of a new generation of electrification ecosystems. This project represents the type of innovation and jobs that we will aggressively pursue and continue to attract to the City of Columbus."

"While there are still many hurdles to pass before this project is finalized, CODA's selection of Columbus and Ohio is an important milestone that speaks volumes about our community and its public-private collaboration," said Alex Fischer, President & CEO, The Columbus Partnership. "This can be a transformational project for our community as we leverage clean manufacturing into the future."

"In addition to reducing our dependence on oil, the electrification movement will reconnect American innovation with manufacturing," said Steven "Mac" Heller, Co-Chairman, CODA. "We are hopeful that the federal government will recognize the potential this facility has with respect to strengthening the Ohio economy and ushering-in a new era of electric transportation that will create millions of sustainable jobs nationwide."

From the video:
"So why the name Coda? The official definition is a musical phrase that brings a piece to an end, so that a new one can begin."

Ummm.. okaaaayyy.... Would be more accurate to say they have officially made up their own definition.
Yeah. The official definition is accurate. But by that definition, the Coda would be a gas guzzler to end all gas guzzlers.

There's no defending a stupid name.

Right. My complaint is that while the word "coda" means end, it does not actually mean or even imply "so that a new one can begin" no matter how much they seem to want it to. And now their ad copy claims that falsehood as "the official definition".
