At the Antctartic as the ice shelf melts more rapidly, more freshwater is produced, leading to a stronger undercurrent and more heat being transported towards the ice shelves. This Feedback Loop mechanism is melting Antarctic ice FROM BELOW.

So at the Antctartic we have another Feedback Loop ADDING to the ALBEDO Feedback Loop which BOTH make the ice melt and produce freshwater.

This double Feedback Loop melting the Antctartic Ice could cause a domino effect making the AMOC (Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation) collapse.

This post is worrisome. Please don't look it up.

Power outages in the US are surging, as climate-related extreme weather strain an already burdened energy grid. Over the last decade, severe storm outages increased by 74% compared with the previous 10 years. High winds, rains, winter storms and tropical cyclones including hurricanes, accounted for 80% of all power interruptions over the last 20 years, a new report from non-profit research group Climate Central shows.

New study finds that the AMOC (Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation) weakened by about 12% during 2000-2020. (NOAA Source)

A new study finds that the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) abyssal limb in the North Atlantic has weakened over the past two decades, contributing to sea level rise in the region.

The AMOC consists of an upper cell and a deep sea or abyssal cell that sits underneath. The upper cell transports warm water from the subtropical South Atlantic Ocean across the equator northward toward high latitudes in the North Atlantic, where it cools, sinks, and flows equatorward as cold deep water. It sits atop a cell of colder, denser water at the ice edge of Antarctica known as the abyssal cell. These waters flow north along the seafloor into the North Atlantic where they slowly rise and mix with other waters that flow back to the south. Together, these cells carry a maximum of 25% of the net global ocean and atmosphere energy (heat) transport.

Antarctic Bottom Water is the coldest, densest water mass of the oceans, found in the Southern Ocean surrounding Antarctica. The abyssal limb of the AMOC redistributes heat and carbon as it carries Antarctic Bottom Water from the Southern Ocean towards the northern hemisphere. Using mooring observations and hydrographic data from multiple sources in the North Atlantic, the study found that the northward transport of Antarctic Bottom Water at 16°N WEAKENED BY ABOUT 12% DURING 2000-2020. This weakening of the abyssal cell is associated with an observed warming throughout the deep Western Atlantic Ocean, contributing to an increase in deep sea heat content and, hence, SEA LEVEL RISE IN THE REGION.

This post is VERY worrisome. Please don't look it up.

Fossil fuels and concrete combined to worsen the “death trap” conditions during recent record flooding in the United Arab Emirates and Oman, a study has found.

Scientists from the World Weather Attribution team said downpours in El Niño years such as this one had become 10-40% heavier in the region as a result of human-cased climate disruption, while a lack of natural drainage quickly turned roads into rivers.

At least 23 people died in flood waters, including 10 children in a school bus that was swept away, after regions of the Arabian peninsula were deluged by extreme rainfall on 16-17 April.

Dubai received more than 14cm of rain in the space of 24 hours, equivalent to a year and a half of average precipitation. This was the heaviest downpour since records began in 1949.

So much for the UN "controlling things"...

The number of fossil fuel and petrochemical industry lobbyists has increased by more than a third at UN talks to agree the first global treaty to cut plastic pollution, analysis shows.

Most plastic is made from fossil fuels via a chemical process known as cracking, and 196 lobbyists from both industries are at the UN talks in Ottawa, Canada, where countries are attempting to come to an agreement to curb plastic production as part of a treaty to cut global plastic waste, according to analysis by the Center for International Environmental Law (Ciel).

The 196 lobbyists registered for the talks represent a 37% increase from the 143 lobbyists registered at the last talks, in Nairobi. This in turn was a 36% increase on the previous year’s number. Increased plastic production is a major part of the fossil fuel industry’s plans for the future, and any attempts to curb production, such as those being discussed at the UN talks, are an obvious threat to their profits.

Then let's issue a law to reduce fossil fuel and petrochemical industry lobbyists but the UN have to be in charge of driving the clean energy transition.

Sorry but I have the doubt that the mentioned lobbyists are simply representatives of Petrostates which is another thing.

True problem IMO, as Former Vice President Al Gore said, is that we cannot depend upon Petrostates to rule what is permissible or not and this is a matter which has to be worked out at the UN.

On April 24th Global Sea Surface Temperatures (SST) are now up to 21.19°C, which is another modern-day record.

By comparison, the 2023 record was 21.09°C, held from August 22-26th.

In the reported graph the red line represents the Global SST in 2024 through April 24th, while the yellow line represents the the Global SST in 2023.

Also this post is worrisome. Please don't look it up.

Global SST (Sea Surface Temperatures) are increasing and then also the Ocean Heat Content (OHC) is increasing of course.
In the reported graph it can be seen that the OHC in the Atlantic's "main development region" (MDR) is now (Red line - April 24th 2024) where it was last year 2023 at the end of May (Yellow line - 30 days from now).

For almost a decade, the Australian has been running “climate science denial” ads from the Climate Study Group (CSG) that claim burning fossil fuels is hunky dory and even necessary for life on Earth.

But the latest ad has been “discontinued” after Ad Standards found it contained misleading or deceptive environmental information.

Way back in 2015, Graham Readfearn (then at DeSmog, now Guardian Australia’s environment reporter) was writing about CSG’s advertisements (and their links to the Institute of Public Affairs).

Last year, Readfearn took a forensic look at some of their claims about atmospheric carbon concentration.

Someone complained to Ad Standards that CSG had “published climate denial [and] disinformation in The Australian” and that it was “indistinguishable from editorial content”.

In its judgment, the Ad Standards community panel found the ad was sufficiently marked as an ad, but “considered that the advertisement was making the environmental claim that fossil fuels can be used without concern that they will have a negative impact on the environment”.

Arctic permafrost now a net source of greenhouse gases, say scientists.

The northern permafrost region of the Arctic now emits more greenhouse gases than it captures, according to new research.

Permafrost underlies some 14 million sq km of land in and around the Arctic. The top 3 m contain an estimated 1 trillion metric tons of carbon and 55 billion metric tons of nitrogen. Historically, the northern permafrost region has been a sink for carbon, as frozen soils inhibit microbial decomposition.

BUT rising temperatures are contributing to thawing permafrost and therefore enhancing the biogeochemical activities that worsen climate change by releasing greenhouse gases such as Carbon Dioxide CO2, Methane CH4 and nitrous oxide N2O.

The new study, published in Global Biogeochemical Cycles, synthesised greenhouse gas measurements of the northern permafrost region between 2000 and 2020 to provide a carbon balance for the region, as well as the first comprehensive assessment of the quantities of greenhouse gases the area takes up and emits.

This post is VERY worrisome. Please don't look it up. In fact, as you can see above, the amount of permafrost in and around the Arctic is HUGE.

The ESA Earth Observation Department says that if the Greenland Ice Sheet were to melt completely and the meltwater were to completely flow into the ocean, then global sea level would rise by about SEVEN METERS.

Please notice that in the reported document by ESA the Earth Observation Department calls what I called ALBEDO Feedback Loop as "ice-ALBEDO Feedback" meaning exactly same thing.

Over the last 25 years, the ozone hole which forming over Antarctica each spring has started to shrink.

But over the last four years, even as the hole has shrunk it has persisted for an unusually long time. Our new research found that instead of closing up during November it has stayed open well into December. This is early summer - the crucial period of new plant growth in coastal Antarctica and the peak breeding season for penguins and seals.

That's a worry. When the ozone hole forms, more ultraviolet rays get through the atmosphere. And while penguins and seals have protective covering, their young may be more vulnerable.

A series of unusual events between 2020 and 2023 saw the ozone hole persist into December. The record-breaking 2019-2020 Australian bushfires, the huge underwater volcanic eruption off Tonga, and three consecutive years of La Niña. Volcanoes and bushfires can inject ash and smoke into the stratosphere. Chemical reactions occurring on the surface of these tiny particulates can destroy ozone.

These longer-lasting ozone holes coincided with significant loss of sea ice, which meant many animals and plants would have had fewer places to hide.

What about marine creatures? Krill will dive deeper into the water column if the UV radiation is too high, while fish eggs usually have melanin, the same protective compound as humans, though not all fish life stages are as well protected.

Four of the past five years have seen sea ice extent reduce, A DIRECT CONSEQUENCE OF CLIMATE CHANGE.

Less sea ice means more UV light can penetrate the ocean, where it makes it harder for Antarctic phytoplankton and krill to survive. Much relies on these tiny creatures, who form the base of the food web. If they find it harder to survive, hunger will ripple up THE FOOD CHAIN. Antarctica's waters are also getting warmer and more acidic DUE TO CLIMATE CHANGE.

Also this post is worrisome. Please don't look it up.

It looks like, after 420 days, the continuous daily record breaking of the North Atlantic Sea Surface Temperatures is coming to an end!

Maybe that, as Dr. Gavin Schmidt (Director of NASA GISS) said, now that El Niño has been replaced by ENSO (El Niño Southern Oscillation) Neutral the Anomaly of the Global Temperature Deviation is stabilizing.
But I need other data especially about the monthly and the 365-day Global Temperature Deviation to confirm this important fact.

And while North Atlantic sea surface temperatures (SST) moderate, global sea surface temperatures keep on setting records with no end in sight.

So, unluckily, we have NOT the confirmation that the Anomaly of the Global Temperature Deviation is stabilizing.

I am waiting for next monthly and 365-day Global Temperature Deviation to better understand the behavior of the Climate Change issue.
