Car Care: @#)$(*!% Curb rash...

Had 8 Model Ss out an an event in Austin, TX today with 7 of them having 21" wheels. I think at least 5 of those cars had a least one 21" wheel with rim rash and one with 2. They certainly look cool but think many 20" or 19" turbine wheels might be nice if Tesla ever decides to offer those on their store.

Chicago called with the price quotes today. Roughly $110/wheel. So, for a set of 2 3-second lapses in judgment, I'm paying a hefty sum. About $200k/hour of lapsed judgment. When you figure in the price of the tire that was cut, it just about doubles.

Those look great. Please bang into a few curbs to confirm that they really work.:wink:

You HAD to ask, didn't you?? :cursing:

Thankfully, the Gators did their job and the wheels are as good as new. I used the included tool that came with the Gators to trim off the rash and managed to smooth it out a bit, but it certainly doesn't look brand new. Still, only noticeable if you look for it and my wheels and tires are safe and sound.

Good god man. Did you drI've through a sandpaper factory? Seriously sorry about the rash. Id say go see a doctor and notify your last several partners but thats just more salt. Oops. Said it anyway. Ill let you know how my rimblades look after my first scrape. Plan on putting them on this weekend.

You could always get new alloy gators too, if you mash them up too much - a lot cheaper than new rims...
This whole idea of 21" rims is making me nervous... maybe I should go for the 19's (haven't finalized yet, but need to soon...)

I wonder if the red alloy gators would compliment the red multicoat... or just look cheesy?

Going into a parking garage today I managed to scrape my left rear against a curb, scarring the edge. It's not horrible but it shows a bit of the metal instead of the paint now. Is there a preferred "do-it-yourself" fix for this type of scrape, like perhaps a light sanding with wet paper and matching paint? Or will a detailer fix this fairly easily?

I have friends that have used these guys (Alloy Wheel Repair Specialists Franchise Locations) with good success for repairing rash. This was in Virginia though so check to make sure the franchises by you have good reviews. They will come to you too.

That was my smart ass comment - sorry!

I am very glad they worked as advertised and the wheels are okay. Thanks for taking one for the team!

I got the Alloy Gator to install on my tires to hopefully prevent rash. http://www.alloygator.com

I'll see if I can get the factory to install it before I pick up my car once it's ready.

aaronw, for those of us with less than expert hammering skills...let us know if you are successful in getting the service guys to do the install.

Guess it was bound to happen. Add me to the curb rash club.

Welcome! Some of us are mentors here (more than one rim) if you needed any further honing of your technique=)

I'm seriously considering getting 19" rims if Tesla ever releases 19" turbine wheels. I know about the aftermarket ones but might as well ride the 21" ones until time to replace the tires and figure out what to do next.
