"Cabin Camera Unavailable" Kills FSD. AP Okay.

I wish. Like you, my 2018 M3P’s FSD used to work great until the recall SW change where the cabin camera was enforced. Before that I used to get the “cabin camera unavailable” error displayed on a rare basis before that version, but it wouldn’t affect general FSD operation. However, as I noted in my previous message, it now errors out within the first few minutes of every drive since updating to the newer oV12 (even without enabling FSD) leaving FSD completely unusable. Some people have stated the 2024.8.x (or similar) branch potentially solves it, but I’ll believe it when I see it. There clearly is an issue with 2018 models, so I’m hoping the solution is identified sometime soon. It doesn’t seem like replacing the camera or the wiring harness is a sure thing.

A week ago I replaced the cabin camera & the left door pillar trim myself, did a complete software reinstall and factory reset, and.... so far my issue is resolved. No more "cabin camera unavailable" alerts and the service alert log is completely clear. I'll give it another month or so to be 100% sure but normally by now I would've gotten several alerts & forced Autopilot did engagements so it has definitely improved a lot if nothing else. I purchased the vehicle used in January (2019 M3P) and this alert has been persistent since I bought the car. Fingers are crossed 🤞

I have not yet attempted a factory reset. This may not be a bad idea. Fixes lots of firmware problems on other computers.

Worth a shot. Driver profiles immediately restored themselves from the cloud in my case as well so I didn't really notice losing anything through the reset aside from navigation history.

Just completed a 4 hour drive along highway 101 and FSD stayed engaged the entire time with no loss of visualizations or red hands of death, so I'm considering it fixed. 👍

Same problem with my 2018 Model 3. A temporary solution is to enter service mode, go to the Cameras tab of the driver assistance section, and reset the DAS. This reboots the ECU and camera and gets it working again until it randomly flakes out again later. The car entering sleep will sometimes fix this because this power down reboots the same system.
Mine is doing the exact same thing. Did you ever discover a permanent solution? Constantly resting the DAS is a bit annoying...

I took our vehicle in to Tesla service and they told me the cabin camera is faulting and needs to be replaced (they ended up waiving their diagnosis fee for me). They are asking $390 (incl. labor and taxes) to replace it. I tried arguing (to no avail) that there was no way for us to know when that camera started faulting since we did not have the FSD computer installed until last month - it could have faulted within the warranty period.

Not sure if it is worth the cost. We've lived without FSD for 6 years and haven't felt the need for it. Based on the loaner cars that have FSD, it is still too tentative for most of our driving - it annoys me as much as I am sure it annoys the cars behind me.

How much was the camera you installed yourself, and how hard was the install?

I got one off ebay for under $150. It took me about an hour. It is very straightforward. Pop the plastic piece around the rear view mirror out, remove rear view mirror, pop the plastic assembly off its four clips, use thumb to unclip coax cable from camera, pull coax out of camera, use hex screw bit to unscrew camera from back of plastic assembly you just unclipped.

Reverse order, software reinstall, camera calibration.

For me the issue was not resolved as I was told my issue is due to excessive electrical resistence on a wiring harness inside my right passanger door.

I did a factory reset about an hour ago as well as a software reinstall. No luck on my vehicle.

I did a software reinstall when I replaced my camera a while back as well.

I used to use FSD for every drive. Looks like I will be having my passanger door harness replaced sometime in late July when I have ~$1200 for the service. (not to be confused with the cabin camera harness that someone else had replaced for closer to ~$700 if I recall)

To me it sounds like many of the 2018 model 3s have quality control issues throughout the entire selfie camera circuit.

For anyone else reading this some drivers have had the issue resolved by replacing the selfie camera alone. This seems to have been ~$300. I would reccomend taking your car to the service center for diagnosis to determine what needs to be replaced.

I went ahead and just had Tesla do it. $391 with tax. I guess I had less confidence in my own DIY skills, and also I wasn't as sure of the quality of the parts available online. I got the car back and was able to engage FSD on the drive back from the service center and for the first time it did not error out of FSD with the red wheel of death. Fingers crossed that it is now fixed.

I put in a service request for the hell of it, Tesla service wants to replace the cabin camera and run a low voltage integrity check for $700. Ordered a revised cabin camera (PN 1098383-00-G) for $50 off eBay to install myself, I'll take the gamble and see if that helps at all. Already pulled the mirror trim to check for any loose/pinched connections and found nothing of note. Unsure if this will fix the issue but at least it's only $50. Pro-tip, if you're looking for one of these cameras used try looking for the rear view mirror trim piece with the camera already installed, they seem to be going for $50-100 used while just the camera itself seems to be going for more than twice that on most listings.
Thank you, this worked for me. 2018 P3D, same issue as others with the cabin camera error (and random errors with the left pillar cam). Got the 1098383-G revision used off eBay, with the mirror trim, for 80 bucks. Tesla wanted $560 to fix it, figured I’d give it shot then bring it in if it didn’t work out. Install took maybe 40 min, as I went slowly, but it was straightforward. As soon as I plugged in the new camera the feed popped up via the cam preview in service mode. Did a DAS reset for good measure, and drove to 18 miles for 35 min via FSD (12.3.6). Zero issues. It’s been flawless for over a week, and there have been no errors reported via the service menu. I’ve probably driven about 40 more miles with FSD, and it is functioning as designed. I suspect some of us got unlucky with a batch of bad cameras with a faulty BEC/voltage regulator, hence the intermittent behavior. Very happy with the result.

TL/DR - 1098383-G revision solved it, it was easy to install, and saved me 480 bucks.

Ill try it again. I did not replace mine with a PN 1098383-00-G

I thought it was strange tesla service didnt think to check the camera on mine. I told them I attempted but they didnt verify. They did a comprehensive voltage test instead where they ended up taking apart my passanger door.

The cabin camera cable most likely run down a pillar. No reason they should have had that door open.

The tech I had threw a fit about myself having reset the DAS. In reality he had no clue what the error codes meant.

I wouldnt be suprised if they made up a story about bad voltage in order to bill more.

They also did not connect a splash panel on the bottom of my car on all the screws(missed two, said they would fix fot free, somehow forgot when i brought it back in)

I can confidently say the service center i went to is full of incredibly incompetent employees.

We appear to have the same issue as the original poster.

We received 2024.14.6 recently and our FSD trial started (up until then we only had Enhanced Autopilot - 2018 M3 LR). This past weekend I used FSD to drive from the SF peninsula up to Petaluma and FSD worked as expected. Later in the day, when getting in the car to drive back, we received the "cabin camera is unavailable" dialog and I could not engage FSD. But, if I switched my profile to the auto-steer version of AP, that would still work, except that now when engaging auto-steer AP it will scream with red hands within a few seconds of engaging it and it used to be about 30-60 seconds before it would "blue screen" urge me to pay attention.

I opened a ticket with Tesla, and they are at the stage of charing me a $100 to remote diagnose the issue. I'm betting they will want to replace the cabin camera. So much for testing FSD.

Yup they need to replace the defective IR sensor. This really should be a recall situation but again they are trying to do the bare minimum until people complain enough and I've seen so many people with this issue now on the forums

Estimate came back as $703 to replace the camera and related items. I approved it so I can try FSD.

So far, I'm at: FSD Computer upgrade 2.5 -> 3.0 ($1000) + Cabin Camera Replacement ($703) = $1703, just to TRY FSD.

It worked on a ride this morning, but it came to almost a complete stop when going through an automated toll booth. I took over to prevent getting rear-ended. It's frustrating, because I really want to like FSD.

This should be done free no charge please people don't be paying for this repair

I agree, it should be free, but I have a strong desire to try a functional version of FSD and I will need this fixed for that to happen. If I thought I could convince them to do it under goodwill then I would press the issue, but I doubt that will happen. As far as them issuing a recall, that would be great, but I have no idea how long that will take.
